Social Media Insider: The Facebook Presence Poke

The term “Poke” on Facebook has a different meaning depending upon when you joined Facebook. If you have been on Facebook since High School or College, then the term “Poke” might mean to you something closer to the Wikipedia definition “...a feature on Facebook where a user can try to get another person to notice him or her.”

The actual kind of attention that one gets is really a function of the person they poke, and the relationship between the person who is poked and the person doing the poking. What may feel like a game for some people and may be annoying to other people, I have discovered to be a hidden and subtle feature within Facebook.

I have adopted Poke as a means to share my own extended presence. Friends whom have made it a habit to poke me on a daily basis are more aware of my presence and overall online availability than the friends who don’t poke me. My poke friends know when I may be pre-occupied with life outside of Facebook because when I am busy, my return-poke responsiveness goes down to being non-responsive. I am defining this in terms of minutes and hours as compared to days (or longer.)

If someone is wondering if I am around, a poke is a good way to test this. Those who poke me and experience an immediate reply will know I am around even if they can’t otherwise detect my presence. In the future, I believe this is information that can be channeled into a next-generation presence based service that could be possibly monetized.

I first started thinking about the “Presence Poke” back in June when I was flying from New York to Seattle and my friend Ken Camp poked me about two hours into my scheduled flying time. What he didn’t expect was a poke back from me. By my simple action of returning the poke, Ken knew my flight was delayed - since I could have not replied to his poke if my flight was in the air.

Since discovering the “Presence Poke” feature of Facebook, I have used it as a way to measure the presence and general availability of some of my friends. In turn, I also use this feature to share my presence and general availability to the people who poke me each day. The Facebook Presence Poke, Give it a try.

I would be sooo grateful if someone could properly explain pokes to me. I have recently added the facebook toolbar and keep getting msgs popping up that I have just been poked, although it says no more than that. So don't know if I have or by whom or what the heck am supposed to do in response! I have a poke icon on the facebook toolbar and that never increases everytime I get a new poke .. so I am guessing that it is just a problem with the toolbar and that I am not really getting any pokes .. although don't want to offend any of my friends if they are real pokes .. pls help, as a tad confused.

I think "poke" got a bad rap from the early days.

As a result, I have never used it, and, to my knowledge, it has never been used on me.

But your post has my brain whirring a bit.

I have presumed that the best "presence" test is the chat status. Online, Idle, and Offline seem pretty reasonable. If people are actively "FaceBooking", they should appear Online. If FaceBook is running in the background (thus resulting, sadly, in an ignored poke), their status should appear Idle. This seems reasonable enough (though far less fun and/or annoying).

Anyway, great article. My brain hurts a little.

My poke friends know when I may be pre-occupied with life outside of Facebook because when I am busy, my return-poke responsiveness goes down to being non-responsive. I am defining this in terms of minutes and hours as compared to days (or longer.)

I remember that trip when Ken poked you Jeff. We were all traveling and your plane was so delayed! It was an awful night for you and you didn't even get to enjoy the nice suite you got :(

I think poking is a really good thing. Not all people agree, but I get poked by some of the most interesting people and have long held the belief that it is under valued.

I remember when I first started poking with any regularity. We were in an airport and I was in a line waiting. Bored out of my gourd, if you will. I do not like lines. So I had this inane idea to start poking people. It has become a habit...when I travel I poke.

What's interesting is how many people seem to like it. And use it as a reason to communicate with me differently. I can't tell you the number of dialogs started due to a poke. Many times I'll get a message back, by now the message frequently makes reference to my being in an airport. I don't poke EVERYONE on my list unless I am in an airport. So if you don't get regular pokes from me, out of the blue you get one...that's probably where I am. In an airport. Send me a message! :)
