twitter: For Legacy and Family

This past weekend I hosted a session: “Living with 140 Characters and 5,000 Friends” at Kinnernet USA. One of the points which I wanted to make but ran out of time about was using twitter “for legacy and family.”

How we approach using twitter is all about our perspective and approach. For almost everyone these days, twitter is used to share “the NOW.” And most of the time when we tweet, we don’t think about what any specific update will look like tomorrow, let alone 5 or 10 years from now.

Like it or not, the use of social media platforms like twitter will define our online legacy. The words we say over time will shape and frame the person we are from a digital perspective. Now imagine if some of the people who are reading your tweets will not read them for 5 or 10 years or longer.

How many of us have kids who are growing up at the moment who we would like to be able to talk to about things going on in our own lives but just can’t because they are not old enough to understand and appreciate what it is we would like to share with them? And when our kids come of age, how will they react to the things we said about them on platforms like twitter, in podcasts or in our blogs?

Or what about yourself? How would you like to wake up in 4 years and read something you tweeted about years before and be inspired? You can. It all comes from your own approach and perspective how this information is captured and shared.

The sooner you realize your use of social media will have lasting effect on defining your digital legacy, the sooner you may want to take proactive action to leverage these platforms differently. Or at least use them with full knowledge of your choices.

I am someone who believes that life’s moments matters. And given the opportunity to capture a moment in time in the form a word or a 140 characters provides us all with the ability to in effect send ourselves a digital postcard from the present to the future while capturing our past.

Shortly after my father died in 1998, whenever I saw a photo of him as a child I asked myself: “What was the photographer thinking when he took this photo?” and then I would ask “what was my dad thinking about when he was sitting in that chair getting his photo taken?” And maybe I am the only kid in the world who wished he had a chance to get to ask his dad these questions and know his father better but somehow I don’t think so. What I know about my dad is based mostly on my own experiences as his kid and a little based on what my relatives shared with me about him over time. My dad never blogged. And as far as I know he didn’t write any books and he didn’t leave any digital information for me to discover. In the end he was just a dad who will be remembered in memories and in photographs and a few videos.

I believe the kids of the future will have a much better chance to get to know their parents and grandparents in their own words and will have a chance to experience them from a much different perspective than generations in the past. This in turn will change the way they think about us and their future relationships with us. I’m not sure if this is for the better but this is something that is already happening and something there is no getting away from.

When you have a chance, take a moment and tweet yourself a digital postcard to be read in the future. You may be surprised when the words you say today makes your day in the future.

Readers of my blog are invited to follow me on twitter and drop by as often as they like. :)

For girls and women, ugg boots look fantastic with tight-legged jeans tucked into them, or with short skirts paired with opaque tights or bare legs. For guys, cheap ugg boots work great with jeans, and give a very casual, or rugged look, depending on the jeans or the shirt you wear with your ugg boots. The warmth of a sheepskin or ugg boot at http://www.uggretailer.org means they can be worn without socks or hose, even in some of the coldest conditions.

Hello Jeff,

Thanks for reminding me of the value of recording personal/family history. Just yesterday I read a blog post from Shelly Palmer about the hijacking of his wifes Facebook account and the subsequent loss of all the valuable "history" contained within.

Today, life-casting is all the rage but, like you say, life-casting is also about life-recording and people and companies aren't really viewing it this way. Perhaps this is because of the way the tools are used and presented to the user and the features that are currently available.

Regardless of why, it is obvious that this is valuable and companies that now provide "life-casting" tools could do better at providing "life-recording" and archiving features.

I'll send an email with more.

Thanks for provoking these thoughts.

Thanks for the great post today Jeff.

I've thought a lot about my "Digital Legacy" and had a revelation myself a few months back. I was preparing to leave on a red-eye from SFO > MIA and realized that if the plane goes down, all my information stored on the cloud would be lost forever. My Gmail account is basically the "The History of Me." It's essentially a day-to-day account of my life for the past 5 years. All things serious and funny are contained within it and I would want it to be preserved in some fashion with a trusted friend or relative. We don't keep handwritten journals or diaries anymore and I can't remember the last time I wrote out a personal letter. It's all locked up in the digital domain.

Fast forward a few months: I am now the Director of Business Development here at Legacy Locker (https:///www.legacylocker.com). We provide the mechanism to convey your digital content to beneficiaries in the event of death or incapacity. Now, I know who will have control of my legacy and can have peace of mind on the next red-eye back east.

Come check us out. I would love to hear what you think.

-Gregg
@LegacyLocker

Posted by: Gregg Delman at May 12, 2009 05:18 PM

Excellent point. truly thoughtful, and one that is worth remembering every time we make our digital fingerprint. Note, on a technicality: currently Twitter seems to kill posts more than 2 months old -- but if you feed the stream into friendfeed or one of a couple of other services you get legacy beyond 60 days :-).

Posted by: Gil Yehuda at May 12, 2009 02:19 PM

Great insight Jeff. It made me gone back on my memory lane to think of all that i have written various social network sites like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Iborian.com and in my blog www.kachwanya.com, then i felt good that my life has been well documented.

Then i realized the worst case scenario whereby you can be anything in the Web. You can be expert on anything behind the computer or mobile phone. You can create a completely different identity to what you are in real life. That is to my opinion is the greatest social danger posed by the new media, because at the end you could end up being a fraud in the eyes of people who know the truth.

Posted by: kachwanya at May 12, 2009 10:15 AM

Jeff -

Wow - really powerful post. Thanks for taking time to share this personal perspective that not only we as individuals should heed, but organizations as well.

I wonder what it would look like if brands stopped and really thought about the legacy they are creating, versus just the drive for followers and fleeting promotions? So far, it seems that some are paying attention to the important issues that will inform future generations (e.g. (@Ford and the lower fuel emissions). But, on the whole, I suspect that we have a long way to go.

Hope others will be as equally inspired by your words.

Cheers,
Michelle Batten
