Jeff Pulver: The Future of Communications Keynote from Fall 2007 VON
Yesterday at Fall 2007 VON I had an opportunity to share my perspective on the future of communications. The conversation covered the Internet Communications Continuum and the evolution of social communications. It was great to be able to quote both Tesla on Social Media and Lennon on Social Communications during the presentation. :)
Special thanks to Tom Evslin for being a part of my presentation.

Welcome to Fall 2007 VON!
Yesterday visitors to the Boston Convention Center had a chance to preview the look and feel of Fall 2007 VON. Fall 2007 VON starts later this morning and a VON event has never looked better. :)
Fall 2007 VON will be our most active VON event in our history. I'm excited to see: Video on the Net, Unified Communications, Digium Asterisk World, VONDEX, and Mobile Security all taking place during VON.
Today’s set of pre-conference workshops are our best yet to date. I look forward to catching up with the people attending the conferences and walking our hallways.
I am looking forward to: the seeing the people, attending and speaking at the VON Conference, walking our exhibit floor (starting tomorrow) and just being here to feel the buzz and excitement that will be emanating from the Boston Convention Center this week. This is going to be a great week for the Internet Communications industry.
Welcome to Fall 2007 VON!

Reflections on pulverTV’s Broadcast LIVE from PodCamp Boston 2
Yesterday, room 208 in the Boston Convention Center was transformed into the set for a LIVE edition of pulverTV. We were able to bring together a live studio audience, an engaged worldwide Internet TV audience and a revolving set of hosts who put time behind our desk and guests who sat in our chairs. The overall concept was to provide a platform for friends attending PodCamp Boston 2 to watch, to interact with, to entertain, and to be used to interview other friends with.
What happened along the way was that we reached a new milestone in the short history of personal broadband broadcast platforms when for more than a moment, 389 people were watching our show at the same time. During our 2 ½ hour broadcast, it was great to see: David Kowarsky, Jonny Goldstein, Steve Garfield and Nik “Loudmouth Man” Butler sitting in the host’s seat interviewing people. And our “guests” included people ranging from Casey McKinnon and Rudy Jahchan from Galacticast to the GarageGeeks: Yuval Tal, Tal Chalozin, Ohad Eder-Pressman to Kathryn Jones, Phil Campbell, Chef Mark from the Culinary Media Network to Andy Lipson.
The overall thought was to create a set in the style of “The Tonight Show.” And what we ended up with were quite a few magical moments (both on and off camera) which I won’t soon forget. Being that many of the people who are friends of pulverTV were at times sitting in our audience, I did not expect to have that many people watching our show live on the Internet. But during the course of our broadcast our viewers started to bump up, first from zero to 70, then to 135 and then later to the 300-400 range, peaking at 389 simultaneous viewers which set a new BlogTV record.
And our production was a total collaborative team effort. Under the leadership of Andy Lipson with the help of David Kowarsky, we were able to in effect move the pulverTV / New York studio into the Boston Convention Center. We shot live using two Sony Z1U cameras and a couple of volunteer camera people. Once again our Tricaster helped increase the production quality of the look and feel of the broadcast. And behind the scenes it was nice to have friends like Peggy Miles communicating with our guests in our chat room.
Thanks for being part of our show yesterday. I’m looking forward to having some of these guests visit with us at our studio back in New York and for the opportunity to broadcast live again at a future PodCamp.

Look for the Guitar Heronid @ Fall 2007 VON - Booth #1008
My friends Tal Chalozin and Yuval Tal from GarageGeeks are two of my special guests who will be joining us at Fall 2007 VON.
The Guitar Heronid is a robot built by Rafael Mizrahi and Tal Chalozin that is able to play Guitar Hero in medium mode with better than 50% accuracy. After seeing the Guitar Heronid demonstrated at Kinnernet2007, I invited the Guitar Heronid co-creators Rafael Mizrahi and Tal Chalozin to Fall 2007 VON. As it turned out, Rafael wasn’t able to join us but Yuval Tal was able to attend in his place.
Tal and Yuval will be demonstrating the Guitar Heronid in booth # 1008 on Tuesday and will be spending time this weekend at PodCamp Boston 2. I hope to have Tal and Yuval join me on PulverTV when we are broadcasting live on Sunday from 3-5 PM (EDT).
As someone who is a fan of Guitar Hero, I’m happy to have the Guitar Heronid at Fall 2007 VON.

Look at Facebook Users Around the World:
After noting the viral growth of the Israel Network on Facebook yesterday, I started to wonder what the current penetration of Facebook usage was around the world and which countries Facebook was most popular in, where English was not the primary language spoken.
To get to these results, I did a manual mashup of the country statistics Facebook provides together with the country populations published by the CIA Factbook. My study was limited to only the 31 countries Facebook provides user information for.
Overall, Facebook currently has the highest penetration (when looking at users/population) in the following countries:
1. Canada
2. Norway
3. UK
4. Sweden
5. Australia
6. USA
7. New Zealand
8. UAE
9. Lebanon
10. Singapore
And in countries where English is not the primary language, the top Facebook countries currently are:
1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. UAE
4. Lebanon
5. Israel
6. Switzerland
7. Columbia
8. France
9. Netherlands
10. Egypt
(Facebook User Stats as of: October 25, 2007)
Edit: And I would agree with metarand, the International market for social networks remains wide open.
Special thanks to Alec Saunders for telling me where to look to get to the Facebook by the Country user statistics).

Remember to Allocate Time for YOURSELF when you attend Events
One thing I forgot to mention in my recent Things I do BEFORE a (VON) Conference: post, was maybe the most important point of all: Give time to YOURSELF.
Whenever I go to a conference, I find it is very easy to get immediately absorbed in the environment and loose myself in my surroundings. One thing which I only recently started to do was to give myself 15 minutes every couple of hours to catch my breath, take in my surroundings and to re-prioritize my agenda for the rest of the day. This is how I’m sometimes able to squeeze in an impromptu meeting over a cup of coffee or spend a few quality minutes with a friend to catch up.
How often do you feel that when you are at an event you are operating in “autopilot” mode? By scheduling yourself onto your on schedule, you are giving yourself a chance to catch up for a few minutes and give yourself a better perspective on what is going on around you. There have been so many times I wish I could have scheduled myself a break in my schedule. Now I do it as part of the planning of my on-site schedule.
So what about you? What do YOU do in the preparation before an event to make sure YOU are getting the most out of it?

Facebook in Israel: Approaching 100,000 Members
Moshe Maeir was one of the first people to notice that the Israel Network on Facebook was approaching 100,000 members.
Back at the end of June there were about 18,000 people on the Israel Network on Facebook. This number grew to about 74,000 when I spoke at VON Israel on October 14th. Ten days later the network grew by 30% to about 97,000. And in less than another couple of days, there will be over 100,000 people on the Israel Network. Given that Israel has a population of 7 million, more than one percent of the Israeli population is represented on Facebook. Given that Facebook is an English language platform, as Shel Israel wrote, “that is truly amazing.”
At the same time, the numbers of my own friends who are on the Israel network have represented about 1% of the number of people on the Israel network. At the moment, 955 of my friends on Facebook are on the Israel Network. In fact, a little less than a third of all my friends are on the Israel network.

Things I do BEFORE a (VON) Conference:
Since producing my first VON event back in 1997, I am well aware it is the time I invest the week before a VON event that determines how good the upcoming event will be for me. The more effort I make in my own planning of the event, the better the chance I will leave the event meeting or exceeding my own personal goals for the event.
While the suggestions below were written with our VON delegates in mind, many of these suggestions can be applied to just about any event across around the world:
---
With Fall 2007 VON starting next Monday, now is a GREAT time to plan your on-site attendance.
The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of EVERYTHING to do before an event, but these are things on my mind today as I think about attending VON.
Set your goals. This is my number one “thing to do.”
Why are you attending? Who are you looking to meet? What competitors do I want to check out? Who did I promise I would get together with? Who do I want to share a cup of coffee with? Who would I like to share a meal with? Who amongst my contacts do I want to get to know better? What technology do I want to learn more about? Am I spending enough time on the show floor to discover new companies and new products? What sessions at the conference do I want to attend? What time am I scheduled to speak? Who from the Media do I want to have a casual, ad-hoc conversation with? Who do I want to get to know better Which hotel(s) are the host hotels? (Chances are much better you will meet people in the lobby of the on-site host hotels than any of the recommended off-site venues.)
Whether I’m speaking a conference or attending as a delegate, when I’m on-site at the event, I am there for a reason. Most likely it is to meet one or more of the people speaking at the conference. A major advantage a conference delegate has at our VON and Video on the Net events is that they can get to the session room early and be in the room before their designated “target” is in the room and position themselves to be first in line at the end of the session to be part of an ad-hoc meeting. Over the years, I’ve sent myself and others to events all around the world just for the opportunity of the ad-hoc 1-3 minute meeting / business card exchange. And once you exchange cards, ask for an on-site meeting. Don’t put off getting together until after the event. Many times the follow up meetings never happen. Take advantage of the opportunity presented and seize the moment.
Not that I’m advocating any form of “stalking” here – but your ad-hoc meetings are a lot more efficient if you know what your target looks like. Visit this link to see what many of the VON speakers look like. (I just noticed my own bio needs to get updated.) Google Images is also a good way to do some quick research -- at least for people who have spoken at other events in the past.
Say HELLO - DO NOT WAIT. How often is it that you see someone at the start of an event with the intention of catching up with that person later in the day/week and that additional meeting just never happens? For me – all the time. This is why I say hi as soon as I can. My meetings are usually brief so that I can spend more time networking with a variety of people rather than let my time be dominated by just one person. This is not a suggestion to be shallow. Just an opportunity to be time efficient. The more aware you are about this, the better the chance you have to meet more people. Avoid getting yourself corned by one person who wants to dominate your time.
VON Blur Happens - There is a moment of time when I fall behind in my outbound electronic social communication and the hours and the days start to blend together. Rather than fight the blur, I just accept it. While it takes me up to a week to recover from VON Blur, knowing it is going to happen has helped me better prepare for the time I spent on-site. This time I’m going to be giving facebook a try as a means to “stay connected” with my friends while I’m on-site in Boston.
STUDY the Map of the Convention Center - You are able to spend the next 3 to 4 days at this location. Familiarize yourself with the venue and you will have an edge up on everyone else who is also attending.
Be AWARE of the Event Schedule - Write down the times for the conference breakfast, scheduled breaks and conference lunch. These are some of the best times to engage on on-site ad-hoc networking. If you also plan on visiting the show floor, best to know the exhibit hours as well. And know the times and room locations of the people who you want to hear speak and the people you want to meet.
Be in CONTROL of your Schedule. Allocate your time wisely. How often is it that you look back after an event, wishing you had more time to network, more time to walk the show floor, more time to meet with the people who you actually wanted to meet with? When you recognize that “time waits for no one”, after a while you may want to start to work on your on-site time management plan today and take responsibility for at least 12 hours a day of your time – the 7am to 7pm time grid. Don’t become a victim of poor time allocation. Take control and follow your schedule. Make everyday your own.
Don’t be SHY. If you have a hard time meeting new people, now is a chance to break out of your shell and give the rebooted version of YOU a try.
Be SEEN - It is real hard for you to enjoy ad-hoc meetings if you are spending your time in a hotel room on conference calls or all of your time at convenient off-site meetings. You have budgeted the time to be in Boston for a reason. So take advantage of it. Make an effort to be visible.
Be SOCIAL - As a conference delegate for Video on the Net and/or VON, you are invited to attend my “All Conference Party.” The party will be taking place on Tusday October 30th starting at 8pm.
Over the years we have learned what it takes to create a great social atmosphere for an evening of what we like to call “fun.” – make an effort to attend our social events and you will be with hundreds of others who are attending for the first time and people who are also there to meet and network with others from the conference as well as many of the companies from our expo floor.
BRING Business Cards - Bring cards with you and keep a stack with you all the time. Exchanging business cards is still a social experience and something you should be prepared to do just when you least expect it. It could be that you are about to run into the person you are there to meet on a cab line at the airport, while checking into the hotel, while in the elevator, while on the conference registration line or maybe sitting right next to you at a conference session.
Make sure your social media contact details are included on your cards. Make it as easy as possible for the person you are exchanging cards with to continue the conversation with you.
Understand that some meetings will not HAPPEN - Apply the 15 minute rule and move on. “Things happen” and not everyone is as efficient with their on-site schedule as you are. It helps to keep the cell phone numbers of the people you are meeting handy. (And it is ok to blow off a meeting or two in favor of something that just came up, so better to text/SMS the person and tell them you are running late and need to reschedule.)
ENJOY yourself - Give “having fun” a try. At VON, I’m the one of the people who “takes having fun…seriously.”
These are just some of the random thoughts in my mind as I think about how to advise others how to get the most out of our VON events.

Meet Another Jeff Pulver: One of My Digital Twins…
I first wrote about ”The Other Jeff Pulver(s)” back in May, 2004. So far, I have run across three people named Jeff Pulver: One from my home town, another from New Jersey and a third living in California.
Amongst my 3,000+ friends on Facebook, I guess it was just a matter of time before another Jeff Pulver joined Facebook. And another Jeff Pulver is now on Facebook, and we are now friends.
While I thought it was cute to see the Facebook status message: “Jeff and Jeff Pulver are now friends” what I started thinking about was my own social identity. I am wondering what people who share the same name can do to contribute to the building of their own personal brand without affecting the branding of other people with the same name whom are active in the same social space.

Announcing: The VONCamp UnConference – Oct 30th to Nov 1st 2007
I was going to write an original blog post announcing VON Camp but I liked what Alec Saunders wrote so I am quoting from his blog:
“One of the coolest new sessions at VON this year is the VONCamp Unconference. Borrowing heavily from the successes of the BarCamp movement, this is a whole day affair that will be part of the Innovators track at the show. The idea is that topics which aren't necessarily covered in the main sessions can be proposed, presented and discussed here. Think of it as constructive anarchy. Amazing things can come out of these sessions.
My good friend Tom Howe will kick the day off with an "agenda bashing" session, where all attendees will decide on the agenda for the day. After that, 12 sessions of 25 minutes each area available. Anyone can present and everyone is expected to participate in some way.
Go check out the wiki. Sign yourself up, and decide if you'd like to speak or participate in some other way.”
---
Looking forward to seeing you at Fall 2007 VON and at the VONCamp Unconference where we will be discussing the future of Internet Communications.

Looking forward to Fall 2007 VON
A week from today I will be back in Boston, catching up with friends from around the world, people who are part of the global Internet Communications Industry.
The Sunday before VON traditionally provides a relaxed opportunity for our community to reconnect and get an early start on the networking VON has become famous for.
Delegates arriving early to VON are invited join the pulverTV studio audience as we will be broadcasting live on Sunday October 28th from inside the Boston Convention Center from 3-5pm.
I am especially looking forward to having the podium at VON at 08:30AM on the morning of Tuesday, October 30th where I will be sharing my perspective on the future of VoIP.

Tel Aviv: Where Everybody Knows Your Name
As my involvement with the Israeli Hi-Tech Industry has grown during the few years, I have been fortunate to end up with a large number of friends in Israel. In fact, I believe I have more friends in Tel Aviv than in any other city in the world. And for this, I am grateful.
When I visit Israel, I enjoy spending time meeting with friends who represent a combination of: visionaries, dreamers and innovators. I always return from Israel feeling more driven and inspired than before I left. During each visit it seems I meet yet another great startup on the cusp of making it big. While the entrepreneurial sprit is alive and well in a number of cities around the world, as far as I can tell, it is the strongest in Tel Aviv.
On Thursday night I had a chance to catch up with a bunch of friends in Tel Aviv at the Brasserie. The Brasserie is my favorite café in Tel Aviv and offers the best sound track of any café I have visited in Israel.
If I could have chosen a sound track to be played during my recent visit to Israel, it would have been the theme song from the TV Show "Cheers." (Words by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo)
---
"Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.
You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name.
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
--
Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came..."

A Sunset in Tel Aviv:
I just returned back to New York after spending the past week in Tel Aviv. While I have some great memories from this trip, every time I visit Tel Aviv, I am always taken back by the beauty of the "everyday sunset" in Tel Aviv. Below is a sunset photo I took on October 15th:

VON Israel 2007: A Great Event
VON Israel 2007 took place earlier this week (Oct 14/15) and overall it was a great event.
Continuing the momentum of VON Israel 2006, VON Israel 2007 brought together both a mixture of international speakers as well as many of the leaders of the Israeli Internet Communications industry. I enjoyed the opportunity I had a chance to catch up with Israel’s Minister of Communications, Ariel Atlas. It was also great to see the diverse range of people who spent time at VON Israel, people ranging from the European Union’s Ambassador to Israel, Ramiro Cibrian-Uzal, to Ami Erel, the Chairman of Cellcom and the numerous early-stage entrepreneurs who went to VON Israel to have their ideas and dreams validated.
On the news side, VON Israel generated a number of headline news stories covered in the Israeli business press and our event was also covered by a number of Israeli bloggers.
“Social Media” was one of the hot/buzz topics of the conference. This was a topic which came up during my opening keynote on Sunday and was covered by a number of speakers including Yossi Vardi during his speech on Monday. VON Israel provided a great environment for people interested in both carrier and enterprise VoIP solutions.
I’m looking forward to returning to the States and preparing for Fall 2007 VON in Boston where I will be sharing my perspectives on the future of the Internet Communications Continuum.

Nikola Tesla on Social Media
"Our senses enable us to perceive only a minute portion of the outside world. Our hearing extends to a small distance. Our sight is impeded by intervening bodies and shadows. To know each other we must reach beyond the sphere of our sense perceptions. We must transmit our intelligence, travel, transport the materials and transfer the energies necessary for our existence."
Nikola Tesla, 1905

This quote was shared with me by my friend Tal Muskal who is the founder of SemantiNet.

Michael Arrington on Yossi Vardi:
A few days ago, Mike Arrington wrote about my friend Yossi Vardi and in the process posted one of my all time favorite posts on TechCruch. (seeing 70+ positive comments regarding a TechCrunch story was especially cool.) Yossi first spoke at a VON Conference back in the spring of 1998 and was one of the featured speakers this week at VON Israel 2007. Yossi is someone whom I greatly admire, someone whom I continue to learn from, and someone whom I'm proud to say has been a friend of mine for about a decade. I appreciated reading Mike's heartfelt words about Yossi and his approach to investing in entrepreneurs:
"...If you are an entrepreneur (or think you may be), forget the critics (even us) and the naysayers and just do what your heart tells you to do. You may be wasting your time, but at least you got into the arena. And if you fail, make sure you fail while “daring greatly.” Then, get into the arena again, having learned from your mistakes."

How to Win Friends and Influence People with Social Media:
I wonder how Dale Carnegie would have approached social media.
These days there are thousands of people who are “winning friends and influencing people” by implementing their own personal social media strategy. These are the people who have recognized the value of investing the personal energy needed in the building out their personal social media networks. These are people are by doing what it takes to build a substantial list of followers on platforms like twitter while at the same growing their friends network on places like Facebook. People like Robert Scoble and Chris Brogan.
These are people who have discovered by posting a URL on a twitter update or updating their Facebook status message, it is possible to get the people who are part of their respective social media networks who happen to be online at the same moment to take a specific action. In many cases they are able to turn a passive friend into an active one. Sometimes this leads to incremental comments posted in their respective blog posts; sometimes this is how they share a new website with their friends; other times they use their networks to check the pulse of a specific topic. There is really no shortage of the ways resourceful people are leveraging their own social media networks.
The last time I checked, Robert Scoble had 6,355 following him on twitter and was managing to deal with about 4,937 friends on facebook. In my book this makes Robert Scoble a social media “King.”
Just as a point of comparison, my friend Chris Brogan who is also very active in Social Media at last check had 1,978 following him on twitter and is dealing with 1,288 friends on facebook is more of a social media “Prince.”
How are YOU leveraging YOUR Social Media Network?

Tom Evslin: The Third Stage of the VoIP Rocket Never Fired
Tom Evslin: The Third Stage of the VoIP Rocket Never Fired
"There is no third stage of VoIP as an incremental improvement on POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). Instead there is a whole new way to communicate. POTS won’t be improved; it’ll just be replaced. The rearguard action fought by traditional phone companies will eventually result in their over-priced and underperforming voice services being replaced and abandoned since they aren’t being improved (unless those companies can control the Internet – that’s a big unless).
In the new communication world – which is already forming inside social networks – live voice and voice mail are just two on a continuum of choices people have for communicating with each other. Video’s a choice; so is text and email and still pictures. Communication can be live and real-time; it can be slightly async like texting; or seriously async like email. The modes of communication mix freely. Two or more people using different devices communicate at the highest common denominator rather than the lowest.
And there are no more phone numbers, just names and handles (made up names). There’s no more great directory in the sky; there’s the union of the directories of the social networks we use and our personal directories. We’ll know who’s “calling” us as surely as we know whom we’re calling (callerID today tells you where a call is made from, not who is making it)...It’s been an interesting ten years. And it’s only the beginning."
---
Yes it has been an interesting ten years. An Amazing ten years. And as Tom said, this is only the beginning. The Thrid Stage of the VoIP Rocket is one of the topics friends will hear more about during my Industry Perspective at Fall 2007 VON.

Social Media / Internet Communication Trends: The Conversation
Back in the day, Content was king, but in the world of social media communications, "the conversation" has taken the throne. Sure, content still matters, as does context, but for those of you who are looking to where the next mega trend on the Internet will be, I am placing my bets on something I am referring to as: The Conversation.
Many of us have shifted away from the one-way experience of Radio and TV, (the majority of the time our radios and TVs are on they are entertaining us in the background) and away from one-way content on the web. We have moved towards experiences that both engage us and afford us the opportunity to have Conversations. There are two major trends to consider here for businesses who are interested in participating in the evolving Internet Communications Marketplace: be PART of the conversation, and to be PRESENT both when and where the conversations are happening.
Businesses participate in The Conversation by having an active social media presence. For some this includes a Facebook strategy, maybe a commitment to produce podcasts and sometimes participation through interactive real-time social media platforms like: twitter, Jaiku and Pounce.
By embracing social media, a business can shift from being a monolithic company name or a branded product and transform themselves to a person, an individual who advocates and evangelizes. YOU can become part of a community, with a voice, and with an interest in the people around you. And in this way, brand equity and common experiences go further than any traditional marketing or advertising effort ever could hope to achieve. This is core to what I sometimes refer to as “Bottom Up Community Development.”
People seeking to build business around this shift from Content to The Conversation should observe Facebook ads and the interstitial ads inside Pownce. Similar to the Google's context sensitive AdWords which are presented alongside your Gmail, several companies are placing their advertising dollars into new territories where the Conversation is the key activity.
For example, “The Pudding” is a social media play whose technology listens to telephone conversations and provides relevant advertisements based on the content of the conversation. As social media continues to evolve, I expect to see more of these kinds of content/context plays as people figure out the balance of what works and what is too intrusive.
The way I approach the Internet continues to be influenced by my experiences as an Amateur Radio operator…as a self enabler. I like to look at thing from the perspective of being able to communicate without the need of a traditional service provider. I also like to look at ways we can leverage the power of the internet and do the things which were never before practical without it.
This for me is, in some ways, an extension and a manifestation of what we were doing with ICQ and CUSeeMee in the early days of Internet Communications, and thus, why I feel so strongly about the Internet Communications Continuum. This is all part of the larger story of helping people communicate in richer, more meaningful ways. ]
Whenever I turn on my Ham Radio, I can almost always find someone to talk to, regardless of the time of day. And the same can be said with social media platforms, be it twitter or Facebook. These are the places where the conversations are taking place, a place which is “On” on a 24/7/365 basis and a place where you are never alone, and a place where you can always learn something new, but only if you are part of “The Conversation”.
Where are YOU part of the Conversation, and how many ways are YOU communicating with your friends, partners, and customers?

Encouraging our Kids to become Entrepreneurs:
My “Dot Com” kids Dylan and Jake are growing up. Now that my twin sons are 13 ½ years old, they have been looking at ways to make some extra money, as a way to supplement their weekly allowance. As a result, my kids are now working together on plans to do something which may turn into their first internet startup.
To put things into perspective, my kids have been on the Internet since they turned 3. They learned to read at age 4 so they could better interact with search engines. These are kids who have been growing up ON the Internet. And as a result, the Internet has been a part of their everyday life for a very long time. And I have to ask, how many 13 year old kids do you know can say they have been actively exposed to the Internet as long?
This all started just a few days ago after I posted a guest blog from my son Jake who shared his take on the Apple iPod Touch. Based on the feedback he received from sharing his experience, Jake and Dylan started exploring the possibility of launching a site which covered the areas of interest they were both passionate about. Now if my kids actually follow up, get their home work done and spend the time needed on this project, they may actually end up with something very interesting and a new pulver.com startup.

Mets, Baseball, Startups and Always Wanting to Believe …
Baseball is an amazing game. An ever forgiving game. And a game where anything can and will happen. “It Ain’t Over Till it’s Over” is a phrase which rings as true today as when Yogi Berra first said it. Fans of Baseball know how a game can drive their emotions. Baseball is a game which makes some of the most unlikely people famous and a game where each spring brings out the hope in all baseball fans. Every year could be THE YEAR. The year for our team to make it to the World Series. And maybe the year our team becomes World Champions.
It has been over a week since the Mets 2007 baseball season came to an end. A season which reinforced the concept that every game in a 162 game baseball season matters. Games count as much in April as in September. And had the Mets figured out how to win 2 more games in 2007, they would have made it to the first round of the playoffs. When Jimmy Dugan in “A League of Their Own” said “There is NO Crying in Baseball”, he didn’t know about the 2007 Mets and how they would manage to break the hearts of their fans when they would experienced a September meltdown of historic significance.
On the positive side, the 2007 Mets gave me reasons to believe in them. And more reasons to love the game. The Mets staged some incredible come-from-behind victories. Some players on the Mets reached career milestones. And despite all their troubles in September, these 2007 Mets were still playing a significant game on September 30th with the chance to make it to the playoffs. How many other baseball teams wished they had such an opportunity? The answer, many.
Now, I’m not exactly sure what the connection is, but it seems that a number of my friends from the venture world are also dedicated baseball fans. I’m guessing it has something to do with the fact that as investors they believe in their startups and they share the belief that anything is possible. That the companies in their venture fund portfolios will be the winners in their respective spaces.
Based on my own startup history, being the CEO of a hi-tech startup can feel a lot like what a baseball fan imagines it is like being the manager of a major league baseball team. You always have to worry about what the owners (investors) have to say and how they react based on your teams recent performance. So the pressure is always there. And like any good manager, we have to learn to cut our losses early, and how to balance our desire to embrace younger players and help them gain the experience that they will remember for the rest of their careers with doing what we need to win. And when needed, we make the moves we need to in order to secure our chances for a victory. The bottom line is that in both baseball and in our startups, we have a better chance to be successful when everyone on the team supports and respects each other and when everyone believes in the collective vision.
This isn’t to say that every season will be OUR season or that every startup will make it. The truth is, many teams have losing seasons and many startups fail. Sometimes a startup’s failure can also be heart breaking. For example I had a lot of confidence in Tello back in the day. All I have to show for it now are the lessons I learned.
But when things don’t work out the way we had hoped, I have also learned there is always a tomorrow. There is never any shortage of great new ideas. And by allowing ourselves to believe, we leave ourselves the opportunity to believe that our next season will be the one that takes us to a championship, and that our next startup’s exit will be the one with a multi-billion dollar valuation at the IPO.

PodCamp Boston 2 is just Three Weeks Away. Will YOU be there?
PodCamp Boston 2 will be taking place October 26-28th, right before Fall 2007 VON in Boston.
I'm looking forward to being at PodCamp Boston 2 and for the chance to catch up with some of my friends from both twitter and Facebook.
I have been a big fan of the PodCamp experience, ever since I attended my first PodCamp last September.
I look at PodCamp as a place where people can embrace their creative spirit and meet the people with whom they have a shared common interest. PodCamp a place with no barriers and where people are there to give of themselves as much as they are there to learn.
PulverMedia is a sponsor of PodCamp Boston 2 and I am looking forward to spending my weekend before Fall 2007 VON at PodCamp. It is also where I will be giving a session called: "Lessons of a Serial Parallel Entrepreneur."
Over 1,000+ people have already registered. PodCamp Boston 2 will be quite THE event.

The Internet Communications Continuum:
According to Wikipedia, Continuum Theory can be defined as: “anything that goes through a gradual transition from one condition, to a different condition, without any abrupt changes or "discontinuities."
And for now when I refer to the Internet Communications Continuum, I am referring to how I envision the continuing evolution of the IP Communications Industry. In my case, this continuum represents all forms of IP Communications, including: VoIP, Instant Messaging, Presence, IP Signaling, Internet TV, Unified Communications, Social Media and more.

Jake Pulver Reflects on the Apple iPod iTouch:
I asked my son 13 year old son Jake to share his take on his new Apple iPod iTouch. The following are his words:
"When I heard that the iPod Touch was coming out, I thought it was a bad move on Apple's part. That was before I tried it out. Now, I have found that the iPod Touch can be described as modified version of the iPhone, without the Phone part.
There are quite a few advantages that this new iPod has over the iPhone. First of all, being more of a music device than a communication device, the iPod Touch has a Wi-Fi iTunes Store. Besides for the lack of video products (Music Videos, TV Shows, etc.) and Pre-Order albums, I would say that this Wi-Fi iTunes Store is very cool and very handy if you either aren't near a computer or don't have one. Also, for this reason, the iPod Touch comes in both 8GB and 16GB, while the iPhone only came in 8GB. Next, the iPod Touch is much thinner than the iPhone, probably due to it not being a phone. Finally, with the lack of phone service, comes a lack of AT&T. This means that unlike the iPhone, you don't have to pay $50 a month for service on the iPod Touch.
Sadly, with advantages, come disadvantages, even without counting the obvious not being a phone thing. Firstly, the iPod Touch, unlike the iPhone, does not have a camera feature, which I was very dismayed about. Secondly, it doesn't have speakers, like the iPhone did. Maybe Apple couldn't make good speakers for the iPod Touch, as the ones for the iPhone were not so good. Besides for these differences, the iPod Touch and the iPhone are pretty much the same.
Overall, I think the iPod Touch is a very cool device. I love using it to go on my favorite websites through Safari and to check what's new on iTunes. So, if you would like to have a very cool, sleek iPod, the iPod Touch is what you need.”

I come to Praise Skype, not to Bury Them.
History was made on September 12, 2005 when Skype was purchased by eBay.
And I still stand by the words I posted in my September 12, 2005 blog entry:
"Usually we don't see revolutions until after the fact...I suspect that historians might come to recognize today's announced acquisition of Skype by eBay, as one of the great indicators of the historic transformation in communications. Today's move by eBay in purchasing Skype is transformational because it signals the ability and value of an "Applications Company" adding a "Communications Company" to its portfolio. The acquisition turns the entire telecom industry picture on its head, and demonstrates that voice, presence, text messaging and other IP-based applications will be essential for the company of the future.
Until today, we looked at building communications networks and applications differently. Telcos never were the developers of applications – frankly, developing applications is not the telcos' strong suit. Innovation happens at the edge. Now we have an example of how communications will be swallowed by the edge. eBay, because it comes from a place where it knows about community, how to build community, and how to enable end-users within its community probably knows how to harness the products and services that Skype's technology will enable."
Back then I also was thinking how eBay might be able to leverage the power of Skype in a private eBay Social Media platform when I wrote: "Unlike traditional voice communications providers, eBay gets the concept of community and community building. Adding a rich IP-based communications capability -- including IM, voice and presence applications -- to its community should dramatically enhance the value of and services available to eBay's community…
…Companies like eBay that live in the "bottom up" space know what people want -- and now, via Skype's enabling technology, can deliver the applications that people want. By improving the ability of eBay users to 'see' others' 'presence' with Skype, the effect should be the creation of a more perfect market and allow eBay sellers to increase auction prices based on a more efficient method of reaching all possible bidders."
As it turned out, eBay wasn't able to leverage the disruptive potential of Skype. This doesn't mean it was a bad deal. At the time of the deal, in good faith the transaction took place because people believed in the possible. Chances are the issues which lead to the write-down of the asset this week had much more to do with the internal politics of eBay and the realties of being part of a multi-billion dollar transaction and the way it affects the lives of the people involved.
And from the perspective of the VoIP industry, the eBay/Skype deal showed entrepreneurs if you follow your dreams, anything is possible. And a 2.6 billion dollar transaction with the possibility of being worth 4+ billion was the biggest deal of its kind in the history of Internet Communications.
Ironically, back in September, 2005, I'm willing to bet the 300 largest communication companies from around the world would have gladly pooled their resources and paid the Skype team US$ 3 Billion dollars to in effect take away a major would be competitor from the marketplace.
My advice to the current eBay team is to take notice of a suggestion I first suggested on September 12, 2005 which was ridiculed at the time by TheStreet.com: "If you take the elements of eBay, including the micro-payments capability of Paypal and, now, the IP-based communications capabilities of Skype, we may be seeing the formation of the next Reuters." And if not Reuters, than at least Brokerage Firm 2.0.

Jeff Pulver's Suggested Facebook Friends Code of Conduct:
These days I am a full-time resident of Facebook. Since joining earlier this year, I now have close to 2,600 “friends” on Facebook. As I have spent time in Facebook, I have been working on an ever evolving approach I try to follow with respect to how I interact and communicate with my friends on Facebook.
I am not in any way suggesting that the Emily Post of Facebook would endorse my words, nor am I suggesting anyone else follow my suggestions. But if you are new to Facebook and you are wondering how someone approaches their Facebook friendships, the following is how Jeff Pulver is currently approaching his.
---
Jeff Pulver's Suggested Facebook Friends Code of Conduct:
- New friends are welcome. Please don't be shy.
- Please only friend me if you are a person. Companies need not apply.
- When friending, please share our common connection if there is one.
(I understand that sometimes I am an email contact and when you group friend people it is not always possible to indicate anything. I have the same issues when adding friends from my own contact databases.)
- Please feel free to send a message, VoiceMail and/or Video message.
- Poking is ok. And if I poked you it was meant as a quick way of saying hi.
- Please take a look at the photos I upload and tag them when you can. And feel free to comment.
- Please don’t be offended if I don’t choose to join your group or cause or event when invited or when I leave your Facebook group.
- Since I don't bite. Please don't bite. Friends protect friends from Vampires. And Werewolves.
- Please try to be more selective on which applications you share with me.
- As a friend, please make an effort to communicate with me. Maintain a running dialog.
- Please feel free to add your own suggestions/corrections to this list
---
So how do YOU approach friends on Facebook? What is YOUR Facebook Friends Code of Conduct?
Readers of my blog are invited to join me on both twitter and Facebook.

I am looking forward to Fall 2007 VON
I am looking forward to spending the week of October 29th in Boston at Fall 2007 VON. And I will also be in Boston to join the 1,000+ people attending PodCamp Boston 2 taking place the weekend before Fall VON.
VON is the home of the worldwide Internet Communications industry and is the business birthplace of the VoIP industry. VON is an event with a long and rich history as a place where people are asked to share their vision; a place to conduct business; to meet customers; the place to go to get ideas validated; the place to get a company funded. VON is the place where people go to come to catch up with the state-of-the-art of what is happening inside the world of Internet Communications and the meet with the people who are making it all happen.
I am looking forward to speaking at Fall VON where I will share my perspective for the future of Internet Communications.
While I am at VON I will be meeting with a number of early-stage startups. If you would like to schedule a meeting, please contact me on Facebook.
