It IS a Great Time to be a Nerd (or a Geek)

I just read Tom Evslin's blog post: Great Time to be a Nerd and just smiled.

Tom is right. It really IS a great time to be a Nerd or a Geek. (I have trouble explaining the difference.)

In fact, now is just a great time to just "be."

Video on the Net: NYC - May 12th-13th 2008 (UPDATE 2)

Since putting out my initial “Call for Speakers” I have received several hundred emails from people who are interested in speaking at our next Video on the Net Conference, taking place May 12-13, 2008 in New York City.

I am in the process of confirming speakers and I am trying to get back to everyone who contacted me. I expect this will take another week or so.

The focus of Video on the Net is to look at the effects of the Internet on the future of TV, Film & Broadcasting. From my perspective, on the Internet, "Video is just an Application."

Some of the sessions I am currently working on include:
- Roundtable discussion with Execs of TV Networks about their Digital Media strategies
- Mashups of Social Media + Internet Video. What's next?
- The Impact of Internet Video on the 2008 US Presidential Elections
- Future of Internet Video Advertising: A Look at Companies Changing the Landscape
- Personal Broadband broadcasting: Building NextGen TV Stations and Networks
- Personal Mobile Broadcasting: Millions will be sharing; who will be watching?
- Internet TV: Approaches to Public Policy
- The State of Indie Internet TV
- The Future of Video Search
- A look at how Not-For-Profits are using Internet Video
- Delivering High Quality Mobile Video

(These sessions are in a state of flux. Some will make it to the final program and others will be replaced by other sessions.)

Our session on “Internet Video Startups to Watch” has evolved into a Cocktail Reception / Technology Showcase taking place the evening of May 12th. Companies interested in being considered to be one of our “Internet Video Startups to Watch” should directly contact me ASAP (send email to: jeffp@pulver.com).

As far as the rest of the topics to be discussed, I continue to be open to your ideas and suggestions. If you are passionate about a topic and would like to be considered to speak at Video on the Net, or if you know someone who you feel could contribute to this conference, please email me.

I continue to be someone who believes that both Personal Mobile Broadcasting and Personal Broadband Broadcasting is going to be BIG, very BIG. (You are invited to watch the archives of my own Internet TV show and my Qik videos.

And if you use twitter, please follow VideoOntheNet. Video on the Net is one of the first “twitter aware” conferences.

Getting Ready for another Breakfast with “Real-Time Social Networking”

DSC_0667-1.JPGDSC_0662-1.JPGDSC_0654-1.JPGDSC_0663-1.JPG

I just spent the past hour putting together the 110 “Personal Social Networking Toolkits” seen in the pictures above.

You might be wondering why anyone would spend what has amounted to hours placing stickers, name badges, post-it notes and pens into ziplock bags preparing for a breakfast they are hosting. Me too. But I do this to prepare for the breakfasts I host because I recently discovered a way to make business networking events a truly fun experience.

I am someone who believes that the more virtual we become the more we need to have face to face meetings. So at the breakfasts I have been hosting, I have taken some concepts from social media which we typically experience when we are online and have brought the concepts to real life.

The moment my guests write their “personal tag line” on their name badges, they are ready to take place in a unique face-to-face social networking experience. An experience where guests use the stickers in the “Personal Social Networking Toolkits” to tag other guests. These tags are placed on each person’s “personal tag cloud.” And where guests take the supplied mini post-it notes to "write" on the walls of each of our guests.

Tomorrow morning at Friend of a Farmer in New York City from 8-10am I will be handing out these “Personal Social Media Toolkits.” I am looking forward to what I expect will be another “meta social media experience.”

You are invited to join me at VONCamp (the unconference) at Spring 2008 VON.x

I am looking forward to co-hosting with Tom Howe VONCamp, our "Unconference" taking place March 18-19 during Spring 2008 VON.x in San Jose.

The Unconference is an innovative approach to events that enables participants to identify what THEY want to talk about, and organize themselves into groups to exchange the information THEY seek. I have enjoyed taking part in unconferences at both Kinnernet and PodCamp and I am glad to see us embrace the unconference concepts at VON.

The discussions that evolve during VONCamp will address a general set of topics identified by the participants -- but the actual agenda will not be set until the event begins.

This dynamic and unfiltered format will provide a great opportunity for the people attending VONCamp to take part in active and open discussions around a wide variety of topics that matter the most to the people who will be there. At VONCamp we are looking forward to leveraging the collective expertise of the people in our audience. Joining me at VONCamp will be a number of the people who are also speaking at the VON.x conference.

Over the years I have hosted discussions with colleagues to promote an open exchange of ideas, and this dialogue has always been at the heart of VON. VONCamp takes this premise to a new level by assembling a wider range of people, and placing them in an environment where ideas flow in an unfiltered fashion. Everyone contributes, and the whole ends up being much greater than the sum of the parts. I believe the VONCamp at VON.x will break new ground and will help uncover new opportunities for the people who will be joining us.

At the moment there are twelve topics proposed by our community. This list is available at http://www.voncamp.net.

As a reader of this blog, I believe you would enjoy the discussions that will be taking place at VONCamp. I also ask you to help spread the word about VONCamp.

To register for VONCamp, please visit: http://www.springvonx.com/register.

I am looking forward to VONCamp, and I hope you can join me.

Recap of: Breakfast with Jeff Pulver (and Friends) in Miami

Back in December I hosted my first breakfast in Miami with four other people. When I hosted my recent breakfast on February 21, 2008, it was great to see our group double in size and include a number of my twitter friends from Miami. I thank Jeffrey Sass (@sass) for the suggestion that the breakfast take place at the Rascal House again. Mostly because the Rascal House is scheduled to be torn down before the next time I will be in Miami for a breakfast and I have a number of fun memories from going to Rascal House as both a kid and an adult.

Picking up on the trend I started in the breakfast in Providence, RI, I broadcast most of the breakfast live on BlogTV. And one of my highlights of the breakfast was when @ViceQueenMaria did a "shout out" in the event chat room for @AnnOhio and the message we received a few minutes later when @AnnOhio was there and she joined our breakfast remotely.

I enjoyed catching up with: Jason Baptiste, Alex De Carvalho, Jeffrey Sass, @ViceQueenMaria, Marc Kevin Hall, John Fleming, Michelle Koh Potts, Matthew Chamberlin, Carlos Caranier-Phelps and Nick Braanger.

Towards the end of breakfast, those who were still around spoke about the experience of “Becoming real-world friends after first connecting with someone online.” (We didn't invent any terms.)

Special thanks to EVERYONE who came out for breakfast. And to Rob Suarez for trying to join us but who ran into car trouble on his way to our breakfast.

I look forward to hosting another breakfast in Miami in the Spring.

Sharing the Total Eclipse of the Moon

With the advent of social media, it is now possible to share moments of our lives with just about anyone in real-time.

Two nights ago as I was leaving a restaurant in South Beach, the people outside on the street were looking up into the night sky and observing a Total Eclipse of the Moon. My immediate reaction was to reach into my pocket, take out my Nokia N95-3, turn on my personal Wi-Fi hotspot, launch Qik and shared the experience with some of my friends on twitter. Things are just different now. :)

A Look at Jeff Pulver's "Breakfasts Across America:"

Steven L. Lubetkin: "Jeff Pulver Breakfasts Across America"

"Jeff Pulver hits the road early when he’s having breakfast with his social media friends up and down the east coast. In February, Jeff launched a series of breakfasts with a kickoff in Philadelphia that drew more than 50 social networking participants. Pulver arrived in Philadelphia from his Long Island home with regular sidekicks Sam and Geo, and promptly set about equipping attendees with “real-time social media tagging tools,” such as stickers, Post-It Notes, labels and markers to use for what Pulver calls real-time social tagging.

Participants write tags or keywords and paste them on each other, as if they were adding bookmarks and keywords in an online environment. By the end of the meal, everyone is adorned with multiple tags and labels, and some even have larger labels or “walls,” where people have written messages, like they do on Facebook or MySpace.com.

Pulver conceived of the real-time tagging event after going to networking events where participants didn’t really connect with each other.

“I thought, why not do a mashup of social media and networking,” Pulver said. In Tel Aviv last summer, he ran a cocktail party where he encouraged participants to write a social media tagline on their name badges. Later, he expanded the concept to add the labels, notes, and walls."

Ma Bell, Meet Joe Gamer: Sony Online Entertainment Ushers in New Era of Voice Chat for Online Games With Powerful Suite of Communication Services

As Chairman and co-founder of Vivox, I like to share Vivox updates from time to time. This is one announcement I'm proud of.

---

Ma Bell, Meet Joe Gamer: Sony Online Entertainment Ushers in New Era of Voice Chat for Online Games With Powerful Suite of Communication Services

Sony Online Entertianment Gives In-Game Chat an Audio Overhaul in Agreement with Vivox.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 20 -- Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online games, is poised to revolutionize the way gamers stay connected with sophisticated new voice services where fellow gamers and guild mates are never more than a shout away.

Need standard chat for groups and raids? Check. Don't want to tie up your own bandwidth? Roger that. Want your voice to sound completely different? Done. Late for your raid but want to take part in the group setup by cell phone? Can do. Dream of having in-game voicemail? There ya go. Playing a non-SOE game but want to use this service, free of charge? Aye.

These powerful community building features and tools are coming to SOE games at no additional cost to players and go far beyond basic real-time chat with the usual headset and microphone setup that is commonly used today.

In an agreement announced Wednesday at the Game Developers Conference between SOE and Vivox, Inc., an established provider of high quality voice communications, players will be able to access a suite of voice communication tools including voice mail, voice fonts to synthesize player voices into in-game character voices, and the ability to receive external calls in SOE games.

"We're proud to offer this level of communication power and flexibility to gamers. These new voice services not only replace many of the voice chat options currently available but add a broad range of capabilities that streamline communication and empower gamers to maintain their online relationships in both the real and virtual worlds," said John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment. "We are giving gamers the ultimate one-stop shop to stay in touch at all times."

Beyond voice and guild chat channels, North American players will get a special PIN number to dial in from either a land line or cell phone and connect with fellow guild members. SOE anticipates adding additional features including voicemail, broadcast messages, SMS text messaging and an initial offering of six high-quality voice fonts that replace a player's actual voice with something completely different.

With the 3D voice chat, players will be able to walk their avatars into the taverns in EverQuest II, for example, and strike up a conversation with players like they would walking into a tavern or restaurant in the real world. Gamers can manage their conversations with buddy lists, volume controls and commands to leave and join audio channels at will.

SOE's plan is to add these services to SOE's games, as well as integrate it with SOE's Station Launcher, so anyone who uses the Station Launcher, even if they don't otherwise subscribe to an SOE game, can take advantage of these powerful voice chat capabilities. Furthermore, the voice features will be hosted and professionally managed on the Vivox Network so users won't be cutting into their valuable bandwidth.

"We are thrilled to team up with SOE to bring Vivox voice chat and related services to their game community," said Rob Seaver, CEO of Vivox. "SOE is an industry leader with a long history of offering exceptional games and innovative services to players. Their plan to offer such a comprehensive voice service to their gamers is just another reflection of their commitment to delivering the best possible game experience and fostering community."

SOE's current catalog of massively multiplayer online games includes EverQuest(R), EverQuest(R) II, Star Wars Galaxies, PlanetSide and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, as well as upcoming titles such as The Agency.

About Sony Online Entertainment

Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) is a recognized worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online games, with hundreds of thousands of subscribers around the globe. The Qik PSA: American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in Ghana Speaking out Against Malaria

My friend Jim Long (@newmediajim) is carrying his Nokia N95-3 with him on his trip this week, traveling with President Bush and his entourage around Africa. Earlier today Jim caught up with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in Ghana and captured what she had to say about helping to stamp out Malaria ("Malaria No More") and shared his interview live on Qik for the world to see and then instantly available to be shared and available on demand.

Personal Mobile Broadcasting is a seed change that is growing into something that will be bigger than many people imagined.

Applications like Qik and the growing widespread availability of 3G wireless and/or Wi-Fi hotspots and phones like the Nokia N95 are helping to just accelerate this. 2008 IS the year of Personal Mobile Broadcasting.

MashUp Artist Dave Troy's Twittervision and Flickervision will soon be on exhibit at MoMA

Tonight my friend Dave Troy will be going to the opening night party for Design and the Elastic Mind at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The exhibit opens to the public on February 24th and will run through May 12th.

I recently caught up with Dave Troy and asked him what he thought about having his Mashup Art selected for this exhibition at MoMa. This is what Dave had to say:

"I believe that these apps were selected and are novel (and important) because they help us see the world in a new way.

Just as every 'net innovation has been "so cool" when it is new, it's because we hadn't been able to see/perceive humanity that way before. Whether it's Amazon, e-bay, google earth, email, genealogical research, history, dating, this too is one of a string of "firsts" that people have responded to.

I don't know exactly what it is about Twittervision or Flickrvision that people find so compelling, but we all seem to. The immediacy, the sense of a global village, the added context of geography all seem to play a role.

This is also the first-ever Ruby-on-Rails app to be featured in a museum setting, for what it's worth. I told David Heinemeier Hansson this at RailsConf in Berlin and it's received some comment in that community.

In the meantime, I have been working on some behind-the-scenes plans that will tie together some of the features all of my sites.

I'm of course ecstatic about the recognition from MoMA and what this means for social media and for digital art. While this one exhibit isn't by itself going to change the world, it should serve as inspiration to designers and developers everywhere to follow their hearts, even if it's into relatively uncharted territory."

Mashup Artist Dave Troy

Congratulations Dave! It is great to see MoMA recognize your art and genius. :)

I'm looking forward to catching up with Dave at the breakfast I am hosting in New York City on February 26th. Later in the day, Dave will be joining me as one of my in-studio guests on The Jeff Pulver Show on pulverTV. Dave will also joining me at Spring 2008 VON.x in San Jose in March.

Join Jeff Pulver at Spring 2008 VON.x in San Jose

I’m looking forward to being in San Jose the week ofMarch 17th and catching up with my friends attending Spring 2008 VON.x.

Since the first VON event that took place in San Francisco in April, 1997, VON has been the home of Internet Communications Revolution. Over the years VON has been the place where the future was explored, ideas were shared and where an industry was born. Spring 2008 VON.x continues this tradition and will be a to be a great place to socialize ideas, conduct business, meet with customers and explore the future of communications.

In 2008 the communication revolution continues. Leveraging the seeds planted by friends like David Gurle when he managed to get Microsoft to support SIP in Windows XP, we are now seeing Unified Communications quickly becoming the accepted in Corporations around the world. And in my book, “Personal Communications” (both Mobile and Broadband) is one of the breakout technologies of 2008.

I will be speaking at the Spring 2008 VON.x Conference the morning of Tuesday, March 18th. My speech will be about the future of communications and will be looking at the answer to the question of “How do YOU communicate?”

In the afternoon of March 18th I will be hosting a general session on “Real-Time Social Communications” I am real excited about. Joining me in the general session will be: Robert Scoble, Loic Le Meur, founder, Seesmic, Ramu Sunkara, co-founder and CEO of Qik, Brad Hunstable, co-founder of Ustream.tv and Jonathan Christensen, currently responsible for voice and video technology at Skype. I also have invites sent to friends at twitter and Facebook and they may also be joining our discussion.

If you have a vested interest in the future of communications, please register for the Spring 2008 VON.x conference. And if are a blogger, please drop me a line and you join the list of bloggers attending Spring 2008 VON.x

Discovering: WhyGoSolo

Ann Bernard was amongst the guests who attended my recent breakfast in Washington, D.C. Ann is the founder and CEO of WhyGoSolo. I recently caught up with Ann and asked her to share the WhyGoSolo story.

According to Ann, "Most social networks are built upon the concept of seeing what other people are doing, announcing what you are doing, but are not built around ensuring you are getting to go out and do the things you love. Being able to bridge from online interaction to actual offline networking and socializing is becoming more important as people are finding great new people online they want to connect with offline.

WhyGoSolo, a company launched on January 5, 2008 is the ideal solution to quickly bridge from online to real world one-on-one or small group interaction around the things you love to do. They offer action oriented methods to interact and connect quickly and conveniently in a variety of ways through their current and future innovative features.

Jeff Pulver’s Ode to “Your So Vain”

I recently re-discovered the words to a parody of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” I wrote seven years ago:

- - -

You're So Vain 2001
(a parody)

You opened up your browser
Like you were surfing onto a yacht
Your mouse strategically dipped below one hand
Your computer was a v-a-i-o
You had one eye in the monitor
As you watched yourself navigate
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your IM partner
They'd be your IM partner, and

You're so vain
You probably think my blog is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this blog is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had IM'ed me several weeks ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never drop me from your buddy list
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams they were options in my future
Options in my future, and

You're so vain
You probably think this blog post is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this posting is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

I had some dreams they were options in my future
options in my future, and

You're so vain
You probably think this posting is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this posting is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Well, I hear you went up to the Webbys
And your website naturally won
Then you flew your mouse up to the JPL page
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not, you're IM'ing with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and

You're so vain
You probably think this posting is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this posting is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

NewBCamp08 is taking place in Providence, RI on February 23rd

What if you had the chance to have a conversation that resolved a nagging computer problem you’ve been having for a week now? Or helped you discover a website which expands your network and promotes your business at the same time? And don’t forget the three minute tutorial on new software you’ve been too busy to figure out.

On Saturday, February 23, 2008, the SofT ICE Club at Johnson & Wales University is hosting NewBCamp, an “unconference” for just that. Rather than a conference, in which the communication is too often only one way, an “unconference” is based around the idea that an event brings people together that have something to talk about with each other.

NewBCamp will feature break-out sessions based around an informal, conversational format and focus on four tracks – Marketing, Podcasting/Blogging, New Social Media, and Web Development. This event is open to both students and the general public. They are also actively seeking presenters and participants!

An after-party featuring live music by Matthew Ebel will be 5 PM - 7 PM.

For more information or to get involved, please visit their website: http://www.newbcamp.com.

To become a presenter, please visit: http://www.newbcamp.com/page/Presentations

*Event details and registration for the event at http://newbcamp08.eventbrite.com.
*There is an optional $10 registration fee – to opt-out click pay offline.

Separate registration for the after-party is at: http://matthewebel-providence.eventbrite.com

Recap of: Breakfast with Jeff Pulver (and Friends) in Providence, RI

I thank Joe Cascio (@joec0914) for suggesting to me on twitter to add Providence, RI to the list of cities to host a breakfast for my friends from the world of social media. And special thanks to Sara Streeter for contacting Brickway on Wickenden and securing us a spot for our breakfast.

On the way to Providence I decided to start broadcasting on BlogTv and I ended up continuing to broadcast on BlogTV during our breakfast. This was a first for one of my breakfasts. And it was kind of cool to be able to share the breakfast with the people who dropped by the broadcast.

I enjoyed catching up with: Hilary Mason, Sara Streeter, Jeff Glasson, Joe Cascio, Adam Darowski, Randy Cole, Pamela O'Hara, Joyce Bettencourt, Andrew Shearer and Patrick Dyl. Joining us remote via BlogTV were a number of people including: TracyLee (@bStarrGazr) in Nashua, NH and Kory Kessel (@koryk) in Paris, France.

During breakfast as a group we spoke about defining a social media term for “Becoming real-world friends after first connecting with someone online.” This discussion is continuing around the blogosphere and on Facebook.

After breakfast, I joined Hilary Mason, Sara Streeter, Joyce Bettencourt Randy Cole and Patrick Dyl for a tour around Johnson & Wales University, the site of NewBCamp08, hosted by Hilary and Sara which will be taking place Saturday, February 23rd in Providence, RI.

Special thanks to EVERYONE who came out for breakfast. I look forward to host another event in Providence in the Spring.

In search of a social media term for: “Becoming real-world friends after first connecting with someone online.”

Looking for input: With your help, I am hoping you can help us come up with a term that represents what it means to meet someone for the first time in the “Real World” after having a pre-existing Virtual (Online) connection with them.

Ever since I start hosting breakfast with my friends from Facebook and twitter, at every breakfast I have been to, I have had the opportunity to meet people for the first time whom I’ve gotten to know online. And after hosting my 7th breakfast in the past couple of months, I thought it would be fun to have a word we can all use to describe the experience of meeting someone for the first time in real life after having an existing virtual (or online) relationship with them prior.

During breakfast today in Providence, RI, a number of people suggested terms to consider, including:
- FRNDFriend
- Vir2Real
- Net-Real-ize
- Virrealize
- Convirtualize

I would appreciate your reaction to these words. Which (if any) resonate with you? Please feel free to suggest another word into the mix.

Call for Speakers: Video on the Net: NYC - May 12th-13th 2008 (UPDATE)

I'm looking for people who would like to be considered as a speaker at our next Video on the Net Conference, taking place May 12-13, 2008 in New York City.

- Internet Video Startups to Watch

(These sessions are in a state of flux. Some will make it to the final program and others will be replaced by other sessions.)

I am also someone who believes that both Personal Mobile Broadcasting and Personal Broadband Broadcasting is going to be BIG, very BIG. :)

As far as the rest of the topics to be discussed, I'm open to your ideas and suggestions. If you are passionate about a topic and would like to be considered to speak at Video on the Net, or if you know someone who you feel could contribute to this conference, please email me ASAP. I'm looking to confirm most of the speakers by the end of this month.

At Video on the Net there will be a showcase for startups operating in the "Video on the Net" space. And if you would like to be one of our event sponsors, just let me know.

February 12, 2008 is the Fourth Anniversary of the FCC's "Pulver Order"

Four years ago, the FCC granted the "Pulver Order", declaring voice communications services that do not touch the public-switched telephone network to be "Information Services" not "Telecom Services." At the time, I and others advocating on behalf of Internet-based communications considered it to be the first positive regulatory statement on the unregulated nature of Internet communications.

A lot has happened since then. To the extent that communication continues to evolve without the need to connect with the legacy public telephone network, such that broadband empowered consumers have ways to directly communicate with each other, the Pulver Order has provided clarity as to the regulatory treatment of such services in the United States and provides a model for many other regulators around the world. Over the past four years we have seen the commercialization of VoIP shift into high gear, as well as the launch of quite a number of companies and services all focused on helping to make end-to-end IP a reality.

A Great Gadget: The PHS300, My Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot

A few days ago I picked up a CradlePoint PHS300 Personal Hotspot and based on my few days experience of using it, I believe the PHS300 is the new "must have" gadget for every US based Tech Geek in 2008. After all, who wouldn't want to be able to walk down the street with a battery powered Wi-Fi Router in their pocket powered with EvDO? All for around US$ 200 plus an EvDO Subscription. Now I have another way to leverage the Verizon Wireless EvDO service I have been paying US$ 60 / month for.

Ever since getting hooked on using Qik on my Nokia N95-3 and my realization that broadcasting LIVE using Qik performed much better and with less delay when I was on Wi-Fi as compared to using the T-Mobile network, I had a need for "always on Wi-Fi." Of course, with the limited battery life of the N95, I was also tempted to put a car battery in a knapsack and start wearing it my back, but I haven't done that yet. Keeping a supply of extra BL-6 batteries in my pocket now does the trick.

I gave my PHS300 a field test last Friday when I spent my day in New York City. Wherever I went, I was a walking wifi hotspot, literally. And the PHS300 performed well all day, from the first time I turned it on inside of Barney Greengrass to the time I took the stage at Columbia University to speak at the Brite Conference. The internal battery of the PHS300 lasted much better than I had expected it would. As long as I had EvDO coverage, the PHS300 performed like a charm.

After field testing the PHS300 in Manhattan, this weekend I put the PHS300 in my car and turned it on when I took my kids out for a drive. My kids were amazed (for maybe a second) when they were able to start watching YouTube videos on their iPod Touches while they were on the highway. Then they just took that technology innovation for granted. And then I thought, “how cool! my car became a traveling, highly mobile, wifi hotspot.” I wonder what’s next.

If you are already paying for EvDO service and would like to explore the world of personal mobile broadcasting, you owe it to yourself to become your own personal hotspot. Be the first one on your block to be a walking hotspot. And if you don’t have EvDO, you might just want to sign up for EvDO service.

The PHS300 is by far my favorite new gadget. I highly recommend it.

Fear, Greed and Disruption ARE my Three Favorite Words

"I believe in three core words: Fear, Greed and Disruption. Get them in the right order and you can make a lot of money. Get them in the wrong order and you can blow through millions of dollars and not realize what you did wrong." – Jeff Pulver @ Brite ‘08

Recap of: Breakfast with Jeff Pulver (and friends) in Washington DC

During the past couple of months I have enjoyed hosting breakfasts in a number of places, including: Boston, Miami, New York, Philly and Princeton.

I have great memories from each of these breakfasts and I have enjoyed the conversations I've had and the people whom I've met. Each event stands on it's own and I am already looking forward to returning to a number of these cities.

During each of these breakfasts there were people I saw who were: taking pictures, recording video, using Qik, using twitter, using Utterz and other platforms but nothing quite prepared me for the "Do-it-Yourself" Paparazzi` moment that just "happened" during breakfast in Washington, D.C. at Busboys and Poets. When Jonny Goldstein interviewed me on Utterz, I broadcast the interview live on Qik and the others around us took out their cameras and took pictures and shot video. Seems 2008 is the year of "DIY Paparazzi" and most of my guests were part of the "digital paparazzi." Jeff Hibbard was one of the people who captured the moment. That whole experience was just surreal. :)

Special thanks to EVERYONE who came out for breakfast. I look forward to return to Washington, D.C. to host another breakfast in early May.
