Looking forward to speaking at: Cinema-Tech: "Brave New World"

When I was invited a few months ago to visit Jerusalem in July to speak at Cinema-Tech: "Brave New World", I immediately said "Yes!" without any hesitation.

The driving force behind my commitment was that this was a great opportunity to speak at a conference which would host filmmakers, producers and content managers from Israel and abroad...where I would have a chance to discuss the effects of the pervasive broadband on the movie industry and what the longer term implications of the underlying technology shift might mean to this industry.

I looked at this as an opportunity to continue the discussions which I started last October at the 2006 Rosh Pina TV and Film Festival.

And in several hours, I will be at Cinema-Tech and I will be sharing my thoughts on this and something I call: "Digital Popcorn."

After my talk I will be joining a panel of industry insiders whose perspectives I am looking forward to hearing and whom I look forward to be interacting with.

Kfir Pravda: Sharing Ideas on How to Use Internet Live Broadcasting

Kfir Pravda: 3 Ideas on How to Use Internet Live Broadcasting

"1. Do a Q&A session with your viewers, live, with the main characters of your show (Ninjas included…)

2. Join forces with 3 other video Bloggers and do a multi-location online event, covering one common topic

3. Announce a trivia session about a topic, get some sponsorship for a prize, and do a live session around it..."

---

Kfir, thanks for sharing these ideas.

Personally, I think we can all find any number of ways to best leverage LIVE Internet TV.

One challenge that we all face is being able to find and keep the audience that tunes in to our shows. Viewer "hang time" is something that is often on my mind whenever I'm broadcasting.

Which reminds me, please watch my show on pulverTV LIVE today (Friday, July 6th) at 2pm EDT / 11am PDT / 20:00 CET

Thanks for watching pulverTV today:

I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the show today including our guest hosts: Chris Brogan, Christopher S. Penn and Matthew Ebel (three people who are masters of their own domain) as well as my producer, Andrew Lipson.

It was great once again to see so many familiar names in the chat room and it was great to have people tuning in from all over the world.

My next show on pulverTV is scheduled for Friday, July 6th at 2pm EDT / 11am PDT / 2000 CET, although I suspect I may end up broadcasting outside of my studio several times before that.

Please drop me a line if you would like to be a co-host on a future show. Your feedback and comments are also always appreciated.

Feeling addicted to Personal Broadband Broadcasting

There is a trend in the air. And it is already beyond the “Alpha Geek” stage. This trend is something I have been referring to as “Personal Broadband Broadcasting Networks.” The fact is that today, anyone who wants to have their own Internet TV channel can have one. Getting and keeping an audience is a different issue (Kfir Pravda has ideas about this), but these days it is possible to broadcast your own Internet TV show for free. And the fact a bunch of companies (BlogTV, Mogulus, Operator11, Ustream.TV, Veodia and more to come) are all now appearing at around the same time means to me that we will see a feature war evolve which will force these companies to push the feature sets forward on their respective products. And I wonder how long it will be before the folks at YouTube decide that “LIVE” is just a feature that they should be supporting too.

During the past couple of weeks I’ve had my own share of ad-doc Internet TV broadcasting moments over at BlogTV. In some cases I remembered to press the record button and otherwise these are moments in time that will only be known by the others who were watching when I was broadcasting live.

But from the moment I went live with my friend Kfir in the Tel Aviv airport to broadcasting my keynote live from VON Europe to the time I broadcast live when I returned to New York from Stockholm and I had Chris Broagan and then Chris Penn live from Stockholm as co-hosts to broadcasting live this week from the NXTcomm show floor in Chicago (and the back of a taxi on the way to the show) let alone from Midway Airport and then yesterday from Maureen’s Kitchen on Long Island. And then there was the time when I was broadcasting live while driving on the LIE. With all of this activity I just know that there is something special going on.

And as word gets out that with Wireless Broadband everyday people can broadcast on their own personal Internet TV channel, I fully expect commercial TV stations will to start to try using this technology platform for hard-to-reach remote locations. It will be just a matter of time before local reporters start to re-experience what it is like to broadcast live from a car using just a webcam and EvDO. There was a very similar phenomenon that took place in the summer of 1995 when the media discovered Internet Phone. I remember both Radio Stations and TV Stations doing live demos of the technology because it was a cool thing to do. Personal Broadband Networks are the 2007 equivalent and it is just a matter of time before the mass-media discovers this. Because it works. And because it is cool. :)

Welcome to the summer of 2007. The year of Personal Broadband Broadcasting. Looking forward to watching YOU go LIVE with your own channel today.

Kfir Pravda: How to make my mom watch Internet TV

Kfir Pravda: How to make my mom watch Internet TV

"Internet TV is one of the most important development in the world of television and media in the last 10 years. The ability of creators to shoot and distribute shows in a fraction of the budget needed just 5 years ago is certainly a disruptive force in the industry.

However, this market is still a niche, with low viewership compared to traditional media. This is a double edged sword - on the one hand there are a lot of opportunities to capture the market, but on the other hand, without getting money flowing to this industry, most of the players won’t survive - and we will miss this opportunity for good.

So why aren’t (more) people watching?"

--

Seems to me that this is a classic long tail play. The long and simple of it. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be HUGE breakout hits that are only available on the Internet and such hits will have mainstream adoption. It is going to happen. In fact for some people, it already has. During the past year a number of people have signed contracts with media companies who were discovered on the Internet.

But the beauty here is that anyone and everyone has the potential of becoming a breakout "TV Star" - all you need is a little luck...and some talent.

My Profile in the Wall Street Journal: A Year Later

A year ago, on June 13, 2006, I was profiled in the Wall Street Journal Article: "Mr. Pulver Has Just Two Words For You: Internet Video."

Being profiled in the WSJ was an amazing and almost surrealistic experience. I had no idea how many of the people I knew would pick up the WSJ on any given Tuesday and stumble upon the story. And It was because of the story that I met a number of amazing people doing pioneering work in the field of Internet TV who just took it upon themselves to reach out and introduce themselves. I also ran into friends from High School as well as family friends I had growing up.

The past twelve months have been one of the fastest years I can remember…

And a year later I stand by the headline of the story, as during the past twelve months, the advent of Internet TV continues to shape the consumer internet experience while at the same time is helping to transform the way media companies around the world look at leveraging the internet.

While being interviewed for the story, I said that I was looking for "the Vonage of Internet Video" and a few months after the story was published, I believe I found it when I focused my energy in the development and launch of my new Internet TV startup, Network2. At the moment we are working on the Series A funding of the company.

As I re-read the story, I was reminded that the writer of the story, Amol Sharma, was present during a planning meeting for what became our Video on the Net Conference. Amol heard me say to a friend “Do you know any media moguls?” during the planning of an event which was first held in September in Boston and has since been held a second time in San Jose back this past March and will be held again in October 2007 in Boston. Video on the Net is the place where we explore the effects of the broadband internet on the future of TV, Film and Broadcasting. And if you happen to know any media moguls, please feel free to drop me a line as we are always looking to expand our roster of speakers.

It was because of the story being published that I spent last summer working on the completion of the pulver.tv studio. And while I have no plans to produce my own reality TV series at the moment, there are a number of Internet TV shows ideas brewing in my mind. For now, I’m happy just to have the opportunity to leverage the growing number of personal broadband broadcasting platforms that have emerged in 2007.

I can only imagine what the world of Internet TV will look like twelve months from now.

BlogTV: Soon with a LIVE embeddable Player

Last week when I was visiting Tel Aviv, I had a chance to catch up with Nir Ofir from blogTV and I was shown a preview of their new LIVE embeddable player which they are launching this week. It seems the "features war" within the personal broadband broadcasting space is well underway.

blogTV will be announcing its new Live embeddable player for blogs and website owners. The new LIVE embeddable player enables broadcasters to showcase their live shows in any web page that is located outside the blogTV.com environment. When live, their player plays live video stream of the show's host and co-host, accompanied with the live chat feed. Broadcasters can now start their broadcast directly from their blog, which I think is a pretty cool innovation. :)

If you would like to get access to the beta version of their embeddable player, please email: nir [at] blogTV [dot] com.

If Personal Broadband Broadcasting platforms are of interest to you, it might be time you give blogTV or one of their competitors a try.

Looking for something to do? Try doing a Videoblogging Biography.

Chris Brogan: Weekend Project- Videoblogging Biography

"This weekend, get out your videocamera or your digital camera with movie setting, or heck, just your still camera, and interview someone. Pick a family member, maybe two. Would it be cool to interview the oldest person you could visit this weekend, and then the youngest? Is there a character in the neighborhood who’d be interesting to ask a few questions? Go get ‘em, Tiger."

I happen to really like this suggestion for a weekend project. :)

Sometimes You Act Like a Nut, Sometimes you Don't.

Jeremy Penston: Nutters

"Two completely different experiments to change the world have grabbed my attention today. The first, by Jeff Pulver to broadcast on BlogTV, while he was driving his car, struck me as pure American eccentricity. We English are presumed to be the kings of quirky behaviour, but we just banned the use of mobile phones whilst driving so its unlikley that anyone would think to try what Jeff did, even though here, it would be prefectly safe because of our gridlocked roads."

Yesterday I got pulled over on the Information Superhighway…

…and I almost got the first ticket for doing a live video broadcast on the internet from my car!

Yesterday I decided to try to do another live mobile Internet TV broadcast from inside my car. My setup was pretty simple. All I had to do was turn on my EvDO service, put my laptop on my dashboard, log into BlogTV and start to drive. My friend Geo called my cell phone and provided the other half of the conversation for most of the drive time. Overall, things were going pretty well until a police officer noticed that my laptop was on my dashboard and I got pulled over for “obstructing the view of the driver.” Which in turn was the end of my broadcasting day.

When I got out of my car, the police officer just had a puzzled look on his face and could not figure out why anyone would be driving around with their laptop on their car’s dashboard. (I did not dare tell him what I was really doing.) While I ended up not getting a ticket, and only a warning, I now have the incentive to “Pimp my Ride” and create a not-so-obvious car-cam for the next time I want to do a live mobile Internet TV broadcast.

Taking it to the Streets: Live Internet TV from the Drivers Seat

With my recent post about Personal Broadband Broadcasting Platforms on my mind, when I returned to my office yesterday, I decided to experiment with BlogTV from inside the pulverTV studio. This in turn lead to having some fun and I enjoyed having both Loďc Le Meur and Phil Campbell as my “slide-in” co-hosts, for an unplanned, unannounced edition of my own Internet TV show.

After the ad-hoc show, I took the liberty to try something different and decided to go mobile with my laptop and my Verizon EvDO card and to see if it I could do a live broadband broadcast from inside of my car while driving on the highway.

So…I took a short trip in my car and took my Sony Viao laptop equipped with a Verizon EvDO card, logged into blogTV, set up the laptop on my dashboard and started to drive. My friend Geo was the co-host and provided the color commentary and had the responsibility of holding everything together while I was driving. (I do not recommend doing this by yourself on the open road.).

Click here to view a video recorded from this trip.

While it not yet a perfect science, being able to broadcast live from the road to an immediate global audience was a very, very cool experience.

Thank you for watching. :)

Flavor of the Month: Personal Broadband Broadcasting Platforms

When I look at the state of "Disrupted Broadcasting" in 2007, one trend that has my attention is the growing number of startups which will offer everyone and anyone with the ability to have their own broadband broadcasting channel.

And the best part is that other than whatever you invest in your own production (maybe a studio, video mixer, lights, camera, wireless mics, green/blue screen, ...), for just the price of your own time, it is now possible to build on your own brand and use the platforms of sites like Ustream.TV and BlogTV and put yourself on Broadband TV. (look for other companies to announce themselves in the near future.)

And it is because of the advent of these platforms together with advent of pervasive broadband that everyday people will make an effort to create new shows since a major technology barrier has been removed. Ok, it is true that for years it has been possible for just about anyone in the United States who made an effort to have their own cable access show, but how many people besides the fictional characters Wayne and Garth from Wayne’s World ever really took advantage of that?

On the internet one has access to an immediate global viewing audience.

As the numbers of LIVE user generated channels continue to grow, many people will find it be very challenging to FIND and GROW an audience. But, I am confident some people will find their niche and “blow up” into something very BIG. This is bound to happen. We have already experienced this in the world of Internet TV where during the past year an on-line personality gets discovered and gets signed by a major television network. And this will happen again in 2007 and beyond.

By the way, it turns out having friends on twitter is a great way to announce a live broadcast. And as long as twitter continues to scale, I fully expect all of the personal broadband broadcasting platforms to integrate twitter as a broadcast announcement tool.

As someone who used CuSeeMe back in 1993, it has taken some time, maybe a lot of time, but the day of personal broadband broadcasting is here to stay.

Steve Garfield and Jeff Pulver were just "Live" on BlogTV

I just finished doing an ad-hoc live show on blogTV together with Steve Garfield from Boston and another guest co-host (Ask12) from Tel Aviv. Oh, and I was in Miami operating on my laptop and using "borrowed" wi-fi from a neighbor.

As Steve Garfield writes: "This is what's missing from other live streaming sites." I would have to agree.

It will be real interesting to watch how responsive each of the companies playing in the broadband broadcasting space are to adding new features and evolving their platforms.

blogTV: A platform for Broadband Broadcasting

Earlier this year I met with members of the blogTV team when I was in Tel Aviv and I was very impressed with their vision, what they had accomplished to date and their overall approach to the marketplace.

While blogTV is very well known in Israel and launched this past March in Canada, they only recently launched their website, blogTV.com for the US marketplace.

Now at a first glance, blogTV might appear to be a Ustream, but if anything, the reverse is true as BlogTV has been around longer than UStream.

As such, for broadband broadcasters, BlogTV has a number of advanced features which will resonate well with people who have been experimenting with live broadcasts on UStream. For example, one feature which I like with the ability to co-host live shows split a show with a friend and invites an audience member to co-host with me. Advanced users can tweak their system and use multiple cameras, add titles and animations capture their own screens and stream live music. In their next versions they will focus on helping broadcasters do better content and get more viewers.

And while blogTV is interesting as a stand alone offer to broadband broadcasters, once you learn that in Israel, the video created on BlogTV is available for viewing on 3G video phones, all of a sudden, the blogTV platform takes on another role. In no uncertain terms, blogTV has been a major catalyst in taking user generated video content and has empowered a generation of 3G video phone users to be able to take advantage of this viewing experience. It will be just a matter of time before a US mobile carrier approaches BlogTV and expresses an interest to add their user generated video content into their network.

Just to put the BlogTV experience into perspective, at the moment, in Israel, blogTV has about 400 daily broadcasters and it is a part of the Tapuz.co.il portal. Since their initial launch, more then a million Israeli users have watched blogTV. In Israel, blogTV got major attention from the media and they partnered with a TV channel and made a LIVE blogTV show on TV with celebrities hosting it from their homes and inviting co-hosts in real time to broadcast with them in their homes. I understand it was a pretty amazing experience.

blogTV is one of the companies on my watch list that I am looking forward to catching up with when I am in Tel Aviv the week of June 3rd. I expect that in the near future, blogTV will no longer be a secret to anyone who is interested and/or involved in broadband broadcasting in the United States and around the world.

Chris Brogan's story about Internet TV: "5 Million Channels and Nothing’s On"

Chris Brogan / KillerApp.com: 5 Million Channels and Nothing’s On: Discovery and Recommendation in an Internet Video World

"Television is no longer a single box. It's no longer a single tuner. It's a combination of everything your video service provider offers plus everything available via the Internet today. Add to this various set-top box content offerings, like the Apple TV, and you'll see that the battle isn't for your living room; it's for your attention..."

---

Great to see Chris Brogan's story published in KillerApp.com. Reminds me that I should talk to the publisher of VON Magazine about getting him some visibility in that magazine too.

Chicago Tribune: Internet speed battle escalates

Chicago Tribune: Internet speed battle escalates

"Like Wild West gunslingers, cable TV operators and telephone companies are squaring off for a contest over who's the fastest.

...It is a conundrum, especially for cable TV operators, said Jeff Pulver, founder of Network2.TV, an Internet video service.

"In three to five years, there will be devices, not computers, that you can connect to your flat-screen TV that will bring anything you want to see from the Web," said Pulver. "You can bypass the middle people, including the cable TV systems, and just download programs offered by content producers.

"I believe the cable companies will try to put up roadblocks to keep that from happening. They will have the fight of their lives."

---

Sometimes it is hard for a reporter to capture a 15 minute conversation with me in two sentences, especially when the conversation was a recap of my recent Internet TV may pose threat to Cable Companies by Decade's End blog post. But I believe the essence of the story was well preserved.

Feed Me Bubbe and Millie Garfield in the WSJ Today:

WSJ: Using YouTube for Posterity

"Online video-sharing sites are a magnet for technology-crazed teens, aspiring actors and people who like to show off their pets. Now they are starting to attract another demographic: those people's grandparents...

Bayla "Bubbe" Sher's online cooking show "Feed Me Bubbe" has developed a following on video-sharing site Blip.tv and other video sites and has generated thousands of emails from fans, which Ms. Sher, who goes by "Bubbe," or grandmother in Yiddish, responds to herself.

Ms. Sher and her 23-year-old grandson, Avrom Honig, hatched the idea for the show, which Mr. Honig estimates has been watched more than 200,000 times based on internal logs, as a way to preserve certain family recipes like Bubbe's sweet and sour meatballs. They have made more than a dozen episodes to date, mapping out scenes and practicing each recipe beforehand.

"It is a great opportunity for us to spend some time together and to share recipes for the future," says Ms. Sher, who is in her 80s. For Mr. Honig, it offers a chance to showcase his grandmother's tasty cooking and zestful personality: "I get to share the wonderful feelings Bubbe gives me...with the world."

...While some are looking to trace back through decades of history or document big events, others are recording more mundane moments. To help preserve her memory, 81-year-old Millie Garfield of Swampscott, Mass., decided to feature herself in a series of videos documenting one of her 49-year-old son Steve's pet peeves -- namely, her persistent requests for his help opening coffee cans, rethreading dental floss or opening other tightly sealed bottles...

"We have fun with it and it captures our relationship," says Mr. Garfield, who also has his own video blog. "I am very proud of her."

---

Nice to see the WSJ take a moment and focus on Long Tail Internet TV shows.

It was great meeting both Avrom and Bubbe and spending time with them at the Network2 booth inside the Video on the Net Pavilion on the Spring 2007 VON show floor. And congrats to Steve Garfield and Millie Garfield.

Shai Tsur: The revolution will be televised

Shai Tsur: The revolution will be televised

"In the last couple of months I've been immersed in the New Media world. It seems that after years and years of hype about TV and the Internet coming together, it's starting to happen. Joost is the highest-profile example, but there are literally dozens of companies working on becoming the NBC (or Fox, or Comedy Central, or whatever) of the Internet.

As I see it now, no one group will emerge as the 800-lb gorilla of the space. There is too much content out there and -- at least in the realm of top-tier content -- a lot of gorillas already competing with each other. What I think we will see are a number of different classes of television broadcast online:"

Jim Johnson: The Future of Television: Change is Coming Fast

Jim Johnson: The Future of Television: Change is Coming Fast

"Yes, my dear. The future is TVoIP. Get used to it.

Imagine a world where you can download in some still-to-be-invented application or device all the shows you want to watch… think TiVo on steroids, here. New “hit shows” like Lost, CSI, Desperate Housewives, Heroes, 24, etc are uploaded by the producers (not the networks) to their server. You can get new episodes of Jeopardy or Oprah or Days of Our Lives this way as well. Your device downloads them automatically, because you programmed it to do so (like your TiVo). But there’s more. Shows that are now “syndicated” can be downloaded, too. Want to watch the 3rd season of Seinfeld? or the 1st season of Sex in the City? or the entire run of the original Star Trek? Download ‘em all!"

---

And I agree with Jim's that Blonde 2.0's said it best:

"There is a real revolution emerging right before our eyes which will change the way we have viewed and defined TV till now. I believe that within a few years time, we will see the internet establish itself as the leader of all media and that more and more services and technologies will be offered to those watching and those who want to be watched. All I can say is: Watch out broadcast TV - times are a-changin’ and you’re going down."

---

The reality is that there is a lot of real opportunity in front of us. Those who can figure out how to best take advantage of these disruptive opportunities will be in a great position to help define the future of Television.

Kfir Pravda: Cable Companies Beware

Tags: , , ,

Posted by jeff at 11:28 PM | Permalink | Comments (7)

Internet TV may pose threat to Cable Companies by Decade's End.

The Cable Version of “Wireless Conversion” is going to happen.

As a reminder, for the past seven years, billions of dollars of fixed-line revenue has been lost by phone companies around the world as their customers have given up using fixed telephone lines in favor of purchasing their primary phone service from wireless carriers. This trend is known as “Wireless Conversion” and this is revenue which will most likely never be replaced by the phone companies.

In the near future, I expect cable companies may start to suffer a similar parallel fate as the wireline phone companies. This eventually will mean billions of dollars of revenue loss without any notion of being able to replace the lost revenue. And I expect we will start to see this trend happen first in the 16-24 year old demographic.

How does this happen? It happens because there is a portion of the existing 16-24 generation which does not watch traditional broadcast TV and they are not watching Cable TV. What they are watching is TV content on the internet. And when these kids leave home and go off to college, they are not signing up for cable TV service in their dorm rooms. Instead they are continuing to watch their favorite TV shows thanks to BitTorrent or are going online to the network websites to catch up with a missed show or in some cases they are also going to iTunes and purchasing the shows to watch on their video iPods and computers.

So it shouldn’t be hard for any of us to fast forward to the time where there are plenty of consumer electronic devices which seamlessly take Internet TV content and deliver the content to the televisions in our living rooms. While the current version of Apple TV isn’t there yet, there are quite a number of devices that I have recently seen that do get us there. MythTV continues to be interesting too. While this model does assume basic broadband connectivity in the home, it does not assume basic cable service. And in the near future when more content owners like MLB.TV decide to go direct to the consumer and bypass traditional distribution channels, what we end up with is ”Television Disrupted.”

I also believe that in the next 3 years (maybe sooner), some of the major movie studios will start to look to offer viewing access to their first-run movies directly on the internet. This is already happening with Indie Films and it is just a matter of time for this to transcend to the major studio releases.

Add in the millions of “unisodes” already available for viewing on the internet and combine this with the long-tail Internet TV shows that are available for viewing on sites like Network2 and more people will start to take notice. And when the major TV studios implement their own Internet TV strategies and decide to also go direct to consumer and bypass many of the costs associated with traditional content distribution, things like basic cable service become a commodity that an entire generation of people may decide they just don’t need.

At the current rate of innovation and change, I except more and more people will start to watch Internet TV in their living rooms. This in turn may start to pose a real threat to Cable Companies by end of this decade.

The Cable Version of “Wireless Conversion” is going to happen. We just need a name for it.

Technology Evangelist reports on Chris Brogan at Killer App Expo

Technology Evangelist: Your Media Your Way Presentation at Killer App Exp

"Chris Brogan from Network2.tv included a footer in his PowerPoint slides asking the audience to take pictures, blog about it, talk about it, etc. He clearly didn't have a problem with his presentation being streamed live to the web using Ustream from a MacBook Pro.

Brogan's talk covered the growth in online video content: content that's coming from you rather than content being simply watched by you after being generated by corporate media moguls. He admits that while there is a TON of video on the web today, it's not all great, but a lot of it is better than mainstream media sources give it credit for being. For example, online video is not JUST skateboard tricks and painful crotch hits. It also includes things like Alive in Baghdad, Galacticast, and Project Pedal."

Jeff Pulver's @ GarageGeeks / Notes on the Future of TV

Gil Rosen used his Nokia N73 to record my ad-hoc presentation on "The Future of TV" from inside of the GarageGeeks Garage in Holon.

Gil writes: "Last week I attended a rare event - the GarageGeeks get together/conference/party hosted under the title “A peak into the future of TV”. Talk about a hard core event - as you can see from the short vids and photos, it’s a real junky (but funky) garage, in a real industrial zone, with very little space, plastic chairs, no real food, coffee or toilets but it GOD DAMN WORKED! Something about the surreal surroundings made it feel like we are are actually talking about a real revolution (which it is). The fact Jeff Pulver pulled a surprised appearance added to the hyped but underground ambience and left me with some very good impressions, albeit, like I said, offbeat surroundings."

---

---

This was also a reminder that these days, whenever anyone speaks at public events, they should assume that someone is recording the event and that their words will show up on YouTube. Just another video reality of 2007.

The overall experience was a bit surreal and it was also fun to be in a high-energy environment which inherently embraces technology innovation. I am looking forward to my next trip to Tel Aviv and the opportunity to attending another GarageGeeks event.

Discovered at Garage Geeks: 5min

Last Thursday night while I was attending the Garage Geeks event in Holon (outside of Tel Aviv), I met with the people behind a new startup which just launched 5min, "a Live Videopedia", a site dedicated to "How to" videos.

According to their about us page:

"5min is a place to find short video solutions for any practical question and a forum for people wanting to share their knowledge.

The vision behind 5min is a very simple one: any solution can be visually explained in no more than 5 minutes. Our aim is to create the first communal Life Videopedia allowing users from all over the globe to contribute their knowledge by sharing visual guides covering arts, business, fashion, sports, health, tech, food, and much more.

5min's basic philosophy is that everybody is an expert in something. The video era gives us the technological opportunity to share our collective knowledge and gather it onto one platform. This is what 5min aims to be – a platform for users, a platform for creators, a platform for talent and anyone that has something to teach.

In order to bring to life our vision of creating a comprehensive Life Videopedia, 5min gives each creator a private promotional Studio – a space to show his/her skills, and share his/her secrets.

Users of 5min also benefit from a visual illustration of any solution through a Smart Player. Unlike other video sites on the internet, 5min has created a video player adjusted specifically for the Videopedia vision. While uploading a movie, the creator can enhance it by adding a textual storyboard to the video – helping all of us understand his demonstration.

The 5min project needs your knowledge! We encourage you to take a camera and be part of our community. If you know other talented people, invite them to contribute as well.

After all, we all have something to learn from each other. This is the place to start."

--

I also share 5min's basic philosophy that everybody is an expert in something. :)

5min is now on my personal watchlist of interesting Internet TV startups to watch.

Just finished watching Heroes Episode 19

One frustrating part of my trip to Europe this week was that I missed watching the return of one of my favorite television shows, Heros. When visiting the NBC website from my hotel room in Stockholm, since my IP address was from outside of the United States, I was denied access to watch the show. I didn’t try purchasing the episode on iTunes, since my goal was to watch Heros the way I normally do when/if I miss an episode, rather than incur any costs. And while having access to a corporate VPN might have addressed my immediate issues, it wasn’t an option for me.

While I both understand and appreciate the need for NBC to protect the digital rights of their shows, as an American traveling abroad, one day I hope sites like NBC find a way to offer a “Passport” service for traveling Americans who want to keep up with their favorite television shows.

Thanks for Watching the Broadcasts from Sweden Today

Today I had a unique opportunity to give the “Podium Cam” concept a try twice. This morning I broadcast my speech from Innovation and Technology 2007 live on the Internet and while the audio was choppy at times, the concept seemed to work. But it seems that I didn’t give the archive a long enough time to transfer back to the UStream.tv server, so I some of my talk didn’t make it to the archive.

This evening I was all set to give the Podium Cam a second try when I arrived to give my talk at a meeting of the VoIP Group of the Swedish Computer Society in Stockholm. But when I arrived, I saw there were two video cameras setup together with a video mixer to record the session...so at the last minute I logged into Ustream.tv on the machine which was had the video mixing software running on it and I connected the output of the video mixer to Ustream.tv. This in turn meant my second broadcast of the day would have a professional look and feel. But…for reasons which none of us could figure out at the time, the video images that came across on UStream.tv were more cropped then we expected to see them. And then about 30 minutes into my talk, we lost power in the room. This in turn took down both the underlying internet connectivity and the use of the cameras and the mixing software. So, while I tried to continue with my speech without missing a beat, it was the end of my broadcasting day and I lost any chance I had to share an archive of my talk at the Swedish Computer Society.

All-in it was another fun day in the world of live Internet TV broadcasting. Thanks for being a part of it.

The evolution of pulver.tv continues...

Thanks again to everyone who dropped by the Chris Brogan / Jeff Pulver show yesterday on Ustream.tv.

While I was in transit last night from New York to Stockholm, I spent some time thinking about the significance of what Chris and I and hundreds (maybe thousands?) of us have been doing playing with Ustream.tv and the ability for each and everyone of us to have our own ad-hoc Internet TV shows.

Personally, I am pretty confident the pulver.tv team will work out our in-house production issues and challenges and will be able to re-create a TV Broadcast control room with software and innovation. This in turn will open up all sorts of new possibilities I look forward to exploring.

These really are fun times and I am enjoying every minute of it.

pulver.tv has finally found a home and a vision and after a year of searching, I know now why I made the investment. :)

Thanks for watching our show today!

Just wanted to thank everyone who dropped by the Chris Brogan / Jeff Pulver Show earlier today. It felt great to have 125 viewers at our peak and once again it was also amazing to see that we attracted a global viewing audience, with people viewing the show across North America, Europe, and in Australia.

Being involved with a live call-in Internet TV show continues be an engaging learning experience for us. This time around we had our first “studio audience” (we had 4 people visiting) and we experimented with taking viewer calls from both Skype and Chris’s cell phone. As we prepare for each live show, Chris and I have a deeper appreciation for the people who helped pioneer Television back in the 1950’s. The feedback we have received in the past couple of hours has been very much appreciated and we will look to continue to improve our show over time.

Playing with Apple TV

Apple TV + Verizon FiOS seem to work well together. At least there is relatively little waiting to download videos from iTunes these days.

I’m wondering if anyone else is having trouble with the audio levels of music that is played on Apple TV. `

Had A Great Week at NAB2007…and I wasn’t even there.

After spending the first half of April in Florida, I spent four days in a row in my office this week (Tuesday – Friday) which is the first time this year that I spent four consecutive days in my Long Island office.

And while I wasn’t at NAB2007, it seemed that I was well represented there. According to a friend of mine who attended the NAB SuperSessions, in a session moderated by Chris Matthews, Jeff Jarvis put in a great plug for our Video on the Net events. (Thank you Jeff Jarvis!). And then there was the person from YouTube who spoke at NAB2007 and gave me attribution for calling “2008: The Year of the YouTube Presidency.”

- Alan Weinkrantz - When Jeff and Chris Went Live With Their Own Internet TV Call in Talk Show

Blog posts reflecting from friends who reflected on my accounting of our first broadcast.

- Moshe Maeir: Broadcast Live from Anywhere!
- Dan York: Reading Jeff Pulver's account makes me want to try ustream.tv...

I also enjoyed reading the comments shared regarding my accounting of our first broadcast.

One fact that I didn't know until yesterday afternoon is that we did our entire broadcast over the pulver.com Wi-Fi Network. I had just assumed that we were using a LAN connection. Now I'm an even bigger fan of what the possibilities are.

Reflections on our First Live call-in Internet TV Show:

Yesterday afternoon, Chris Brogan and I did our first live call-in Internet TV Show on Ustream.tv. And I finally had another chance to leverage the investment I made last summer in the creation of the pulver.tv studio. In the past few days I had seen others go live on Ustream.tv with just a laptop and a webcam and I wanted to see if I could make something of higher production value for our viewers. So we used our studio and fired up our lights and studio microphone and tried to add a professional feeling to our amateur activities in the world of live internet TV.

Right when the show started and at various points during the show, we gave out Chris’s cell phone number as the dial-in number. And while we did not patch the calls directly into the audiostream, from what we were told, most of the callers could be heard. As people started to call-in from all over the world, it hit me that we were playing with technology that was as disruptive to the future of Media as my use of Internet Phone back in April, 1995 when all I need to talk to people around the world was software, connectivity and a computer. Back then the press considered all of us "hobbyists" and the telecom operators thought we were playing with "toys" yet what we were playing with was the underlying technology that would change the face of communications forever.

Well this time around we had our own live TV show and we were live on the Internet and we were heard and seen by viewers from all over the world. From a traditional media perspective, I could not fathom what the costs would have been for us to rent satellite time for us to broadcast our live Internet TV show into all of the locations where we had viewers. Flashback to my days of listening to shortwave radio, it was like we had our own “shortwave TV” broadcasting facility. It was an amazing moment in time for us.

It is almost ironic that our first broadcast took place the same week that NAB2007 is taking place. The world of media has been disrupted and there is no turning back. We are living in the early days of a new form of broadcasting. But this time around people don't need to invest in the broadcast facilities of a TV station or worry about purchasing a license or invest in the equipment for a studio. We are living in the days where Video has become an application. It is the advent of video being application in a time of pervasive broadband where anyone with a laptop, broadband access and a webcam can create their own live Internet TV show in a matter of minutes. And thanks to services like twitter, it is a lot easier to get the attention of others to immediately come forward and watch your show.

So the innovation here is the ease-of-use associated with creating a new TV show where you no longer need anyone's permission to be live on the net. Ustream.tv makes this a reality in 5 minutes or less. No longer does a show have to get green lighted in order to be seen. The gatekeepers are gone. It is now up to each and every show producer to fine their audience, service their audience and grow their audience from the ground up.

Before our first show was over, we took two calls from people in the UK, a call from Canada, SMS from Argentina and calls from across the United States including a caller from Anchorage, Alaska. And this doesn’t include other people from around the world who were just watching us. Chris and I had a great time doing our show and I am already looking forward for the next edition of the Chris Brogan / Jeff Pulver show.

Special thanks to everyone who called in and participated in our show. And especially thanks to Andy Lipson and David Kowarsky for their work behind the camera.

Live from your Laptop: Ustream.tv

These days anyone who wants have a "live Internet TV show" can have one...for free!

Anyone with a laptop (with a webcam) can visit Ustream.tv and in less than five minutes get setup with your own channel, your own chat room and be live on the Internet.

And if you have a few friends on twitter, it is pretty easy to get a group of people to watch your premiere episode.

Once you go live, you can chat with your viewers via your own online chat room.

This feels like a throwback to the days of CuSeeMe...

And the total cost for this is zero. At least for now.

And there's more. Ustream.tv has introduced "eSeats" where you can establish a price per ticket and charge people to view your broadcasts. This means that Ustream.tv might be a platform to consider when producing fee-based video webinars and this is a feature which does help differentiate UStream.tv from a site like Stickam.

Project Pedal: Episode 4 - (by Mike Ambs, winner of Network2 Contest)

"The idea of Project Pedal came about, thanks to Amanda, almost exactly four years ago - and for the last three years, I've been pouring myself into it with my fair share of difficulties along the way.

But thanks to the encouragement of close friends, family and the readers/viewers of this site - I've always picked myself up and kept trying when things dead-ended with Pedal.

I can't imagine where I would be without this site and without everything it has directly been instrumental in sending my way. My amazing crew, the Black Sheep... the professional advice and support of Matt... the much needed and much appreciated relationships with total strangers who've stumbled onto this site in there own ways.

I've learned so much in the last three years, and if I had any advice to pass on to people reading - it would be, whatever your passion or personal project may be, don't go it alone. Start a blog, and be as transparent and inclusive as possible.

I'm excited about these last two months and the two that will follow - I can't wait for the trip to come. I'm nervous. I'm excited. "Breath in pink, exhale blue". There's a lot of details to get into place - but... this is it, two months left. Here we go." -- Mike Ambs

Network2: Internet TV of the people, by the people, for the people

Blonde 2.0: Internet TV of the people, by the people, for the people

"The user-generated video media landscape is changing quickly. While all of us enjoy seeing frat boys burping on one another or cute puppies who have special licking skills on YouTube every once in a while, Network2 offers those of us looking for higher quality, episodic programming on the web, an alternative.

Network2, has created an internet TV guide of the best independently produced video shows on the web. Shows were picked based on their quality and originality. You can find over 500 web shows all aggregated into one site, add your own comments, rate the shows, and add tags to help users find what they're looking for.

Once you've found your favorite shows, you can create your own channel, share it with friends, create a widget on your site, and also load it into your video browser like FireAnt or iTunes, even into your portable media player. You can check out my channel widget on this blog. Just click on any of the shows and you will be redirected to the episode page."

---

As the founder of Network2, I just wanted to thank Blonde 2.0 for taking notice of Network2 and for sharing such kind words.

Visit Network2 today and let us help you discover new Internet TV Shows.

Steve Garfield continues to make Internet Video History.

Last night I logged onto twitter just minutes after Steve Garfield announced that he was broadcasting video live from his kitchen using wifi and his Nokia N95 phone with a little help of ComVu.

And while Steve was live, I enjoyed using twitter as the means to communicate back to Steve.

The Cog (Honda Accord Commercial)

According to Wikipedia:

"The Cog was a dramatic television commercial for the Honda Accord, made (almost completely) without any CGI or trick photography...

The two-minute commercial appears as a single, long camera pan along a Heath Robinson / Rube Goldberg-like chain-reaction arrangement of parts from the car but is in fact two stitched together, the join being at the moment where the muffler/exhaust box rolls across the floor (this can be seen by watching the floor pattern change). The commercial took 606 different takes to complete, and only minuscule CGI was used, simply for fixing the lighting on the final car's window. The cars featured, one disassembled for the pieces and the other on the trailer, were two of the six hand-built pre-mass production Accords."

PodCamp Europe: 12-13 June in Stockholm

Chis Brogan and Christopher Penn just announced that PodCamp Europe will be taking place 12-13 June in Stockholm.

It is great to see the two co-founders of PodCamp are the ones behind PodCamp Europe.

PodCamp Europe is: "...a gathering of podcasters, bloggers, and new media professionals & amateurs for two days to share, explore, challenge, and grow our abilities in new media. Learn about audio and video podcasting, blogging, photography, Second Life, Twitter, and all kinds of other new and social media tools."

Looks to be a lot of fun. And the entire event is free. :)

PodCamp Europe is co-located at the same venue as VON Europe.

I'm looking forward to being at both events.

Jeff Pulver interview with Technology Evangelist

What trip to the Video on the Net conference would be complete without a discussion with the Founder of VON, Jeff Pulver. Jeff talked to Ed about the some of the big announcements made at VON.

Last Thursday when I was talking the Spring VON show floor, I was interviewed by Ed Kohler from Technology Evangelist. This was a far less noisy interview than the last time I was interviewed by Ed at TECH Cocktail in Chicago.

Network2 takes Times Square by Day; Proof Bar by Night

I couldn't help but notice some of the kind words posted in the blogosphere yesterday regarding Tuesday's Network2 Times Square adventure and what we did afterwards when we hosted a gathering at Proof Bar which brought together a number of people involved in the New York New Media scene. Given that I only gave ourselves 3 1/2 days to put together the gathering, it was pretty well attended.

Justin Kownacki: Network2 takes Manhattan
Kfir Pravda: Jeff Pulver - I Want My Network2!
Bill C.: Pulver / Network2 @ Proof
Eric Rochow: Network2 meetup
Kristian Hansen: Network2 Mixxer

And then there is the blog post from Chris Brogan with whom I started my day with at the Empire Diner. We then visited with Brian Bedol at CSTV and then had lunch with Dan Dubno prior to our Times Square Adventure. Seems after I left Proof, Chris’s adventure continued and he eventually ended up back at the Empire Diner catching up with our friend John Perry Barlow. Amazing how our lives revolve around diners...

Network2 in Times Square: "I want my Network2!"

While I was in San Jose last week attending VON, I woke up one morning with a crazy idea that I had a chance to see implemented yesterday.

After the success of our recently completed user generated commercials promotion, I thought it would be cool to visit Times Square where MTV's TRL is filmed and ask people to record Network2 Video IDs for us. To this day, when I think of MTV, I still think of the early 80s "I want my MTV!" promos. So our thought was to asked people to say "I want my Network2!" and we even offered to pay them for their time. Yesterday afternoon around 3.40pm we found our spot on the corner near TRL (45th and 7th), setup our cameras and started meeting some of the tourists who were visiting Times Square.

While this was going on, Chris Brogan was busy on twitter inviting some of his twitter friends to drop by and also was scouting people to participate in the promotion.

Yesterday afternoon it was in the 70s in NYC which made it feel a lot like the summer. As a team we avoided direct contact with the nearby police (which was a good thing) and ended up having a fun afternoon in NYC. We left Times Square with quite a number of Network2 Video Station IDs and a confirmation that even without a lot of planning, it is possible to take an idea and still "go for it" and than see what happens.

Special thanks to: Chris Brogan, Cameron, Andy Lipson, David Kowarsky (+friend), James Marcus, Grace Piper, Geo Geller and Dan Dubno and all the tourists that happened to pass by 45th and 7th Ave who helped make yesterday happen.

Jim Southworth shares his perspective on “Video on Demand”

Jim Southworth at Spring 2007 VON

---

“Anybody can be the source for the Video on the Demand”

“Cross Video on Demand with SIP…and all of sudden Video on Demand takes on a whole new animal.”

---

I first met Jim 10 years ago and it was great to see him back at Spring 2007 VON. I enjoyed doing the on-the-spot interview using my Sony DSC-T50 camera.

“Jim Southworth is one of the few industry technologists that has a truly broad experience of technology disciplines. His thirty plus years spans everything from extensive applications and operating system software to high-speed telephony transmissions systems and switching matrices. Over the years his responsibilities have included large scale network deployments to unique product development and prototypes. Mr. Southworth has been recognized internationally as an industry expert in various access technologies such as DSL and Wireless as well as various network delivered value added applications such as Voice over IP and Internet enabled video.”

FeedMe Bubbe Discovered at Spring 2007 VON:

Andrew Keen: The Bubble bubble

"Nothing else can explain what I witnessed, with my very own eyes, at the San Jose Conventional Center yesterday. There I was, at Jeff Pulver's VON show, prospecting for interesting young Web 2.0 video companies, and what did I find? I dug up an eighty year Jewish grandmother from Boston, known on the Internet as Bubbe, who had been schlepped out to California by her twenty-something grandson, Avrom Honig, a Web 2.0 entrepreneur. Bubbe (she wouldn't give me her real name) is the star of an Internet video cooking show called "Feed Me Bubbe". Bubbe is evidence of Chris Anderson's long tail. Get used to her. She's the old/new pin-up for the democratized media revolution."

---

It was great meeting both Avrom and Bubbe and spending time with them at the Network2 booth inside the Video on the Net Pavilion on the Spring 2007 VON show floor.

Vlog Nomad's Network2 Contest Entry

Posted by Casey Meade on 9 March 2007
Links: Network2, Wolf+Lamb, Goa
Subscribe: iTunes, FireAnt, RSS

This is my official entry in the "How To Watch Internet TV" Contest sponsored by Jeff Pulver and Network2.tv. It's true, this is basically a commercial for Network2. However, I wanted it to also stand on its own as a viable vlognomad peace, and I think it is successful as a window onto the Anjuna Beach Wednesday Market scene, a small slice of Goa lifestyle, plus glimpse at the new Vlognomad/Projectile Arts base on the hill (Wired -- and unwired -- for broadband since two weeks!). Special thanks to Jeff Pulver for giving me incentive to wake from my narcissistic slumber, induced by the theft of my Sony T50 and iPod (along with all my photos and footage from Kumbh Mela and two weeks in Calcutta!). Sorry for the lapse recently. THANK YOU also to Wolf+Lamb. They're in Argentina. I'm in India. Why not collaborate... we all come out of Brooklyn, right?

Walt Mossberg Watches Internet TV

Walt Mossberg: It's Not All YouTube -- The Web Is a Trove Of Watchable Videos

"In various corners of the Web, people are producing real, episodic TV shows, including news, drama and comedy -- sometimes with real actors and professional production values. Some of these longer-form, episodic shows are called video blogs, or vlogs, but others simply call themselves shows. Instead of lasting just a few minutes, they can run up to half an hour. These programs have more in common with regular broadcast and cable shows than with those emailed clips.

One of these days, a real hit show will emerge on the Web."

"Yet another worthwhile site is Network2.tv, which attempts to aggregate a wide variety of Web videos in one place."

---

It was great to see Walt Mossberg put a spotlight on the world of episodic Internet TV.

I enjoyed seeing Walt mention many of the companies and Internet TV shows that will be attending Spring 2007 Video on the Net from March 19-22nd in San Jose. Just yesterday at VON Mexico I mentioned that our friends involved in Internet TV represent the "Hollywood of the Future." Ot is great to see this vision shared by Walt in his column today.

Companies and Internet TV shows mentioned in Walt's column include: blip.tv, brightcove, Network2.tv; Shows: RocketBoom, TikiBar TV, Goodnight Burbank, Alive in Baghdad, Cube News 1, HotRoast, The Ministry of Unknown Science, Josh Leo.

New Word for 2007: Unisode

from the Jeff Pulver dictionary:

unisode
Pronunciation[uni-sohd]

- noun

1. a stand alone video production not connected to
related, scenes or stories which otherwise would constitute a
literary work.

2. an incident in the course of a single set of
events, in a person's life or experience, etc.

---

When I look at content in the world of Internet TV, I divide content into two categories:
Episodes and Unisodes. Sites like Network2 provide a guide to Episodes of “Long Tail Internet TV." The original content found on sites like YouTube and MetaCafe are mostly Unisodes.

Tom Evslin Discusses Network2 and TV on the Internet

Tom Evslin: Television and the Internet

"My friend Jeff Pulver (formerly a VoIP pioneer and a commodities trader) started Network2, a website which is a good example of PART of what TV on the Internet will be. In many ways IP TV (which is what Jeff is doing) goes a step beyond traditional television; it’s most like TV Guide except that when you click on a show you actually get to see it or download it for later viewing or for watching on some kind of portable device. Network2 doesn’t own the content it points to (but the content is very glad to be pointed at). Network2 does exercise some editorial discretion in picking content. You can’t just upload stuff to Network2 as you can to YouTube. Much of what Network2 points to is professionally produced. Some is content like newsclips, old movies, and trailers for new movies which traditional providers have made available; some is video from sources like the New York Times; there are even high quality made for the Internet shows like Wallstrip.

Channels are something you make yourself on IPTV; they’re the collection of shows you like to watch. You can share your channels with your friends just as you might share music playlists, blogrolls, or recommendations of good books."

---

I appreciate Tom's words that Network2 is "a PART of what TV on the Internet will be." :)

Ghost Rider (The Movie) Opens Today...

Back in September during my talk at Fall 2006 VON, I used Sony Picture's Ghost Rider trailer (powered by Vividas) to showcase where the state of the art in live, streaming High Definition Video delivered over the Internet had evolved to. And since September, I've showcased the same trailer during talks I have given around the world ranging from: Barbados to Germany to Israel and Italy.

To me it didn't matter whether or not I was a fan of the Marvel comic book Ghost Rider, as I felt the visual effects captured by the trailer and enhanced by Vividas was an art form onto itself. And during the past few weeks as I started to see the Ghost Rider movie trailer marketed on various broadcast TV channels, it was a constant reminder of how much more visually appealing the trailer delivered over the Internet was as compared to the visual excitement created from the Ghost Rider trailer created for broadcast TV.

So while I'm not part of the Sony Pictures marketing team that is responsible for the marketing of Ghost Rider, after previewing their trailers as often as I did, I do feel some connection with the film.

For those of you who would like to see the Vividas powered HD Trailer for Ghost Rider, visit this site, click on "Enter the Site", on the top nav bar click on "trailers" and then once the trailer appears in the middle of the screen, click on the stop icon, and then click on HD and experience what I'm referring to. (For maximum effect, it helps if you are on a broadband connected PC.)

New York Times: All the World’s a Stage (That Includes the Internet)

NYT: All the World’s a Stage (That Includes the Internet)

"AT lunchtime, or when he is walking the halls of his workplace, Roy Raphaeli’s colleagues often beseech him to do a magic trick. Usually, he obliges. “I take the opportunity to show people my new stuff and see how they react,” said Mr. Raphaeli, 23, a Brooklynite who works for a mail-order camera retailer.

While Mr. Raphaeli, known professionally as Magic Roy, has been entertaining people with card tricks and sleight-of-hand since he was 5, he does not perform at birthday parties or casino showrooms.

Instead, Mr. Raphaeli’s stage of choice is the Internet, where he has posted 30 short video clips to Metacafe, a Web site that pays video creators based on how many viewers their work attracts. So far, Mr. Raphaeli has earned more than $13,000 from the site, where his most popular card trick has been seen 1.4 million times."

---

A great snapshot of some of the people who have discovered a way to make money from creating video clips that get seen on the internet.

And it was nice to see plugs for our friends at: Revver, Metacafe, Blip.tv, Brightcove and DivX Stage6. These are just some of the companies that will be part of the Spring 2007 Video on the Net community.

Just wish Scott Kirsner was aware that I'm giving away $25,000 for someone to just create a webisode, regardless of the amount of traffic it generates.

Innovations in TV: Prime Time Re-runs Available on Demand

The 2006/07 Television season in the US will be known for a number of things, including the year the television networks started to implement their Internet TV strategies. For the first time, US based consumers who don’t own a TV or a tuner, and just have a broadband internet connection can legally watch prime-time re-runs on demand by simply visiting the home pages of: ABC, CBS and NBC. As long as someone is willing to sit through commercials, there is plenty of prime-time content to be discovered…and it is all available for free.

In terms of content availability, ABC, NBC and FOX are the content leaders followed by CBS. While still a work-in-progress, consumers in the United States can visit the home pages of ABC, NBC and FOX and watch specific full-length episodes of prime-time TV shows on demand for free. CBS on the other hand, while it has been promoting its own “alternative” full-length content on innertube, only offers access to a few specific episodes of their primetime shows.

A year ago someone like myself had to wait until the current season’s DVD of a TV show was released in order to catch up with all the episodes from that show. In 2007 this is quickly becoming a thing of the past. In fact, it is just a matter of time before all the major TV and Cable networks offer an on-demand viewing options for all of their shows together with the ability to immediately purchase just viewed episodes on sites like iTunes.

As Television Networks executives experience the Internet and evolve their strategies, I expect the “Internet Demographic” to be looked at differently than the demographic of the typical person who watches Prime Time television today.

A lot has changed in the world of disruptive broadcasting in the past 18 months and I expect to see more changes and more innovations in the next 18 months ahead.

I'm looking forward to picking up on this discussion next month in San Jose at Spring 2007 Video on the Net.

Playing with Video Accelerator for YouTube:

A few days ago I started playing with Video Accelerator for YouTube, a new product with unique technology that improves the viewing experience of streaming video - so far it has been adapted to YouTube videos but in light of the demand, I'm told it will be enhanced to additional video streaming services very soon.

According to friends at the company, the product leverages multi connection technology to accelerate the caching of streaming video thus helping overcome picture freezes and those annoying buffering problems.

While the product was not officially released, it is only in beta stage right now, yet its gaining very strong viral growth as it is already doing over 10,000 new daily registrations (with no marketing activity or spending at all.)

This product was made by Speedbit, the makers of Download Accelerator Plus (the popular download manager with over 134 million registered users and more than 50k new users joining everyday).

If you find yourself watching YouTube videos, please give Video Accelerator for YouTube a try and let me know what you think.

VDC is Taking on the Cable TV Industry:

Chicago Tribune: Web TV firm fights to add to lineup

"VDC, which started offering live streaming video over the Internet last spring, has struck out repeatedly trying to buy the broad range of TV programming it wants, mostly due to resistance from the cable television industry and its suppliers...has taken its case to the Federal Communications Commission...

...VDC views its business model as a video version of what Vonage, the Internet phone service, did a few years ago. Just as Vonage offered phone service over the Internet without owning network facilities, VDC wants to do that with video.

That's an admirable goal, said Jeff Pulver, who founded Vonage and has since left that company to start his own Internet-based video service, Network2.

"I agree with where VDC wants to go," said Pulver, "but I think their tactics are flawed."

Pulver said that in founding Vonage, he never appealed for regulatory aid from the government because regulation was the last thing Internet-based services need.

"You don't want to invite application of legacy regulations to new technology," Pulver said. "If there's any regulation at all, it should be tailored to the new technology itself and be very light."

----

While I do applaud the pioneering efforts of VDC, going to the FCC and asking them to apply legacy rules on new enabling internet technologies may not be the best way to approach the situation.

Video on the Net Spotlight: The New Video Summit: "Silicon Valley Meets Hollywood on the Internet"

Television as we know it is coming to an end, supplanted by a new interactive form of video delivery that is changing the rules of the video entertainment game. The dynamic power of Internet technology is combining with a vast pool of professionally produced content and user-generated video to upend Hollywood’s traditional business models. As TV and theatrical audiences slip from the grasp of traditional distributors, a new generation of content creators and distributors is rising to develop this innovative medium of video-over-the-Internet.

Although hundreds of miles apart, Hollywood and Silicon Valley are coming together on the Internet to forge this new video medium, which depends as much on technological savvy as it does on creative talent. Join us at Emerging Media Dynamic’s first annual New Video Summit, held in conjunction with our Video on the Net conference, where you'll hear about the latest developments in how technology is changing the rules of the video entertainment game.

The New Video Summit will explore the unprecedented rise of a new video medium that is bringing together giants in technology and entertainment and that is fostering the emergence of technology upstarts capable of changing the online video business with nothing more than new software. Held in the heart of Silicon Valley, The New Video Summit will provide unparalleled insight into the rapidly changing IP video world and deliver the latest insider outlook on where this white-hot new business is headed.

A great group of people are scheduled to speak at the event.

"Early Bird" registration ends on February 2nd.

Have fun with this. If you have an ongoing show, see if you can work the theme into your show. If you're a videoblogger, show us your style. Humor helps, but follow your own path on this. We want your take on the topic: How to Watch Internet TV, mentioning Network2 at some point. Oh, and if you'd give us a link on your website, that would be nice, too. :)

We'll review the submissions (due by March 9th), and announce the finalists around March 16th. We'll announce the winner at Spring 2007 Video on the Net, in San Jose California, on March 20th. Grand prize gets $25,000. Second prize wins $10,000, and Third Prize takes $5,000 home.

For more information, please visit: http://pulver.com/contest. Some restrictions apply, and there's plenty of rules to read over at: http://pulver.com/contest/rules.html.

International Herald Tribune: Small screen, new programs

IHT: Small screen, new programs

'Jeff Pulver, a U.S.-based entrepreneur, also has shifted his focus from Internet telephony to Internet TV. "The energy and enthusiasm invested in bringing television to the Internet is right now incredible," said Pulver, who is behind network2.tv, a site that creates Internet television channels from content found on the Web.

"The next Murdoch will be the person who best edits to serve his audience," he said, referring to the News Corp. founder Rupert Murdoch.'

While I was at DLD07 I was interviewed by Thomas Crampton of the International Herald Tribune. The last time I saw Thomas was back in 1997 in Singapore when he interviewed me for a story he was doing on VoIP.

Reuters: Internet to revolutionize TV in 5 years: Gates

"The Internet is set to revolutionize television within five years, due to an explosion of online video content and the merging of PCs and TV sets, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates said on Saturday."

O.K., so there isn't much of anything new said by Mr. Gates. But at least he is saying it and helping to educate the rest of the world on the future effects of the broadband internet on the future of TV, Film and Broadcasting. Just another reason why people should consider attending Spring 2007 Video on the Net. And if you register by Friday, Feb 2nd you can say US$200 and take advantage of our special "Early Bird" pricing.

A Jeff Pulver SHOUTING Interview with Technology Evangelist

Back in October during TECHCocktail2 in Chicago I sat down for an interview with Technology Evangelist. What I didn't realize at the time of the interview was the high amount of background noise and the effects of "talking loud" into the microphone. The result was my first SHOUTING interview of record. I would have liked to have attended TechCocktail3 which took place on Thursday night in Chicago, but I had a prior commitment in New York and I had meetings in Boson on Friday.

The Making of Ilana Donna:

Back on November 19th Ilana Donna joined the line up of Internet TV shows available at Network2. Her popularity at Network2 quickly grew and saw her jump into the Network2’s weekly listing of the ”The Best” Internet TV Shows.

At the time Ilana joined our lineup, her show was a passion and hobby and something she did when he had time to dedicate to it. Well, it turns out that Ilana Donna has a day job working at Associated Press and she was asked to make the transition of producing her show as her day job and rename it Reel City Tales for the benefit of the Associated Press’s member newspapers who have signed up for the AP’s under-35-oriented “ASAP” multimedia service.

As word of the Associated Press latest move into the new-new media space spread around the blogosphere, some people have taken the opportunity to share their thoughts on the subject. Yesterday both GAWKER and Michelle Malkin on Hot Air shared their reaction/perspective on the subject.

Blake Krikorian Slinging during Davos:

NY Times: Davos Gadget Gets a Silicon Valley Tweak:

'On Thursday, Blake Krikorian, co-founder of Sling Media, the Silicon Valley maker of the Slingbox, was ecstatic that he had managed to outfox the World Economic Forum organizers...

...Mr. Krikorian confessed that he had stayed up much of the night in his quest to uncripple the handheld computer, which allows attendees here to keep track of their schedules and send e-mails to others at the forum. (The iPaqs have to be returned at the end of the week.)

Of course, his technical achievement raises the profound question: Is there anything worth watching on TV - either in San Mateo or Davos?"'

2008: The Year of the Internet TV Presidency Continues with Senator Hilary Clinton

2008: The Year of the YouTube Internet TV Presidency:

Add Senator Hilary Clinton to the list of candidates who have chosen to announce their intent to run for the Presidency of the United States by taking advantage of Internet TV.

First John Edwards, then Senator Barack Obama and now Senator Hilary Clinton.

Seems each of these candidates have a taken a different approach in sharing their video message.

John Edwards choose YouTube, Senator Barack Obama choose Brightcove and for the moment Senator Hilary Clinton choose to host her video herself.

Seems both John Edwards and Senator Barack Obama understand the benefits of "social media" as their videos on YouTube and Brightcove can easily be shared. While it is just a matter of time before fans of Hilary Clinton take her quicktime video and uploads it to YouTube, it is interesting that her default "go to market strategy" from her tech advisor(s) was not to immediately embrace social media.

Senator Barack Obama’s Presidential Announcement Generates 140,000+ Views in first 24hrs on Brightcove

As reported yesterday by Steve Garfield, Senator Barack Obama’s announcement generated 140,000+ Views through midnight on Tuesday night. (I confirmed the same stats yesterday with Jeremy Allaire in an email exchange.)

Just goes to show how powerful a platform Internet TV has become in 2007. And it doesn’t hurt that the same video looks so much better on brightcove than on YouTube.

Welcome to 2008, the Year of the Internet TV Presidency.

Looks like 2008 IS the Year of the YouTube Presidency

Humm...looks like 2008 really will be the year of the "YouTube Presidency." And if not the YouTube Presidency, than at least the "Internet TV Presidency."

First John Edwards and now Senator Barack Obama announces his intentions using the Internet.

With Senator Obama's announcement yesterday, I was once again thinking about the questions a DC policy reporter asked me right after John Edwards made his announcement.

And to be fair with "equal access", I'm sharing Senator Obama's announcement as seen on Brightcove instead of just showcasing the same statement from YouTube.

ABC News: Getting Beyond "Gotcha!"

'The rising role of online video in politics has many pundits calling 2008 the "YouTube election." But it isn't just the "gotcha" videos that have made headlines — candidates, social networking sites and grassroots activists have all scrambled to figure out the best ways to use the new medium...

...Internet entrepreneur Pulver says that no matter what happens, candidates will have to build some kind of online video elements into their campaigns.

"Platforms like YouTube make it challenging to be seen and be heard," says Pulver, "But if you don't use them, you're going to be invisible."'

2008: The Year of the YouTube Presidency

In the last days of 2006, Senator John Edwards announced his candidacy for President of the United States with the help of Rocketboom and YouTube. In 2007, the Internet is delivering on the promise of an intimacy and immediacy that is changing the game for our relationship with media, communications, and entertainment. His announcement on YouTube raised questions in my mind that I recently blogged about.

It seems as if many of the possibilities that I shared during 2006 are starting to happen before our eyes and we are once again able to watch the disruption of an ecosystem unfold in front of us. This time around it is the world of Television, Film and Broadcasting that is morphing into something new. And different. For now I am looking at this as the "TV over IP" space. But I realize this is much more than just TV. And I'm not referring to IPTV either.

During the past eighteen months I've been excited by the disruptive innovators seeking to build momentum using video as an application to deliver their message. I believe this is a robust ecosystem, with creative new technologies and challenging new business models. Look at video networks like Brightcove, blip.tv and Revver. And after seeing a $1.65 Billion US Dollar purchase of YouTube, and $4.6 Billion US Dollars spent on online advertising, there is also serious money changing hands in this space.

And it with the interest of exploring the future that I have been spending time getting my feet wet in the emerging "TV on the Net" space. At Fall 2006 VON I announced my video startup Network2 and I most recently co-founded an "Internet Studio Network" Abbey Corps with Andrew Baron. So that when I'm speaking at Spring 2007 Video on the Net in San Jose, there will be a context to the ideas that I will be sharing.

If you are interested in emerging net technologies, I encourage you to come out to San Jose and join us at Spring 2007 Video on the Net and join us in the evolution and building of a new industry and a new ecosystem. I'm very excited by these emerging trends, and feel you'll find it interesting, too. I hope to see you there.

BTW - I just posted the following video on YouTube to promote the conference.

Nice to Get the Attention of Abbey Klaassen from Advertising Age:

My friend Jeff Jarvis dropped me a note yesterday and gave me the heads up about my reference in Advertising Age a couple of days.

O.K., so it was my game of blog-tag that got Abbey's attention in her story: "Bringing a Human Side to Online Chatter" but it was great to get it. My immediate goal is to now find a way to extend this game of tag and her interest in this evolving social sculpture to spending time with us in March in San Jose at Spring 2007 Video on the Net.

I will drop Abbey an invitation and hope that she can join us in San Jose where business models and things like "how do I make money on Internet TV?" will be discussed amongst the people directly responsible for creating the content. Given the large role that advertising will have in the future viability of many of these efforts, I suspect that we should be able to become a permanent fixture on the radar of Advertising Age.

2006/07 TV Season at the Midway Point: Prime Time Re-Runs now available On Demand.

The 2006/07 Television season in the United States will be known for a number of things, including the year the television networks started to implement their TV on the Net strategies. For the first time, US based consumers who don’t own a TV and just have a broadband internet connection can legally watch prime-time re-runs on demand by simply visiting the home pages of: ABC, CBS and NBC. As long as someone is willing to sit through commercials, there is plenty of prime-time content to be discovered…and it is all available for free.

In terms of content availability, ABC and NBC currently are the leaders followed by CBS and then by FOX. While still a work-in-progress, consumers in the United States can visit the home pages of ABC and NBC and watch specific full-length episodes of prime-time TV shows on demand for free. CBS on the other hand, while it has been promoting its own “alternative” full-length content on innertube, only offers access to a few specific episodes of their primetime shows. FOX is currently offering previews of upcoming episodes, as well as short clips from their shows and/or related interviews but they are not actively promoting the full-length viewing of shows from their library.

A year ago someone like me had to wait until the current season’s DVD of a TV show was released in order to catch up with all the episodes from that show. As we enter 2007, this is quickly becoming a thing of the past. In fact, it is just a matter of time before all the major networks offer an on-demand viewing options for all of their shows.

As Television Networks executives experience the Internet and evolve their strategies, I expect the “Internet Demographic” to be looked at differently than the demographic of the typical person who watches Prime Time television today. Based on the popularity of TV shows on iTunes, it is already becoming clear that there will be shows that resonate with people who watch TV on portable media devices and on the PCs which are not otherwise making it on Broadcast TV. For example, a few weeks ago, NBC’s Studio 60 was the #1 TV show on iTunes yet it never has been so popular during the 2006/07 television season. There is an opportunity to be taken advantaged of here…

In the near future, I expect to see RSS feeds become available where fans of a show can subscribe and will be the first on their block to be able to watch the preview of an upcoming episode. And eventually, I would not be surprised to see the networks start to offer their content directly to consumers on a subscription basis, similar to the way MLB.TV offered their content directly to broadband consumers during the 2006 Baseball season.

A lot has changed in the world of disruptive broadcasting in the past 18 months and I expect to see more changes and more innovations in the next 18 months ahead.

Welcome to 2007…“The Year of Exploding TV!”

Earlier this week, I received a mention by Adam Curry in his daily podcast.

Adam was commenting on Abbey Corps, the company I recently co-founded with Andrew Baron. I will be sharing more information about Abby Corps in early January.

After listening to the podcast, I was reminded that I first communicated with Adam back in 1995 when we were both using Cu-SeeMe. Back then we exchanged a bunch of emails but never did get together. Hopefully Adam will accept my invite to join us at Video on the Net Europe which will be taking place in Stockholm June 12-13.

Nice mention of Network2 in Chicago Tribune:

Chicago Tribune: In a wireless world, quality to count more

...And while telecom has traditionally been all about voice, look for video to command an ever greater role. At least that's Jeff Pulver's view.

Pulver is the telecom pioneer who founded the company that later became Vonage, the Internet telephony operation that now serves more than 2 million customers. Pulver is no longer associated with Vonage; he has started a new venture, Network2, which aggregates video for viewing on the Web.

Internet video created by independent filmmakers and commercial studios will greatly disrupt the broadcast and cable television industries, Pulver said.

"It's inevitable that people will shift their viewing," Pulver said. "They'll watch what they want when and where they want to."

His site features videos that generally run from 30 seconds to six or seven minutes, but some run as long as an hour.

"It's a glimpse of the future," Pulver said. "It's how we'll get our entertainment and information."

Now that is what "Exploding TV!" and "Television Disrupted" is all about.

John Edwards announces Presidential Candidacy on YouTube

John Edwards to Run for President (Announcement on YouTube)

Just saw this on the videobloggers mailing list:

Posted by: "andrew michael baron" andrew@rocketboom.com
Date: Wed Dec 27, 2006 6:48 pm ((PST))

Today Joanne, Chuck and I are out in New Orleans.

We just filmed John Edwards' first announcement that he is running for president.

I just uploaded the video to John Edwards' YouTube account.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=1etlZaf6zUw

(BTW, it may look like a photo op, but Edwards has been working out here all day and has been providing major support since last year when Katrina hit).

-----

Pretty amazing that at the end of 2006, someone announces that they are running for the presidency of the United States on YouTube. 2007 will be a GREAT year for Video on the Net.

Congrats to Andrew, Chuck and Joanne for being part of this historic announcement!

Abbey Corps...Our “DreamWorks”

As Andrew Baron announced on Friday, we have co-founded a new studio network, Abbey Corps.

While I will leave it to Andrew to fill in the details, when I think about our new venture, I look at it as our own version of “DreamWorks”, at least in spirit.

I will leave it as this for now. Time to jump back to my vacation.

Variety: Business biggies wade warily into Web

Variety: Business biggies wade warily into Web

'Most fundamental, of course, is the question of whether there's room for a new video site to succeed on the Net, even with the backing of big media players.

"They're probably a year too late," said Jeff Pulver, founder and chairman of Pulver.com, a New York company that organizes a conference called Video on the Net. "The networks know they have to do something. They have good intentions, and big brand names, but at the end of the day, these joint ventures never deliver on their promise."

Jeff Jarvis...points out that...."You can't advertise it on TV, because the person who's watching TV is 59˝ years old," he argued. "That's not the demographic you want to attract."'

In Search Of...People Developing Episodic TV Content for the Internet:

(Please forward this blog post to friends who might be interested)
-----

Dear Video Makers--

I am Jeff Pulver, the founder of Network2, a guide to the best Internet TV. We believe that showing people where to find quality video is helpful to people, and we want to promote your work as something people should know about.

Our guide is a rich media experience, where potential audience members can watch shows like yours and see what you're producing. We build a channel for each producer's show, complete with your show name, a link to your original website, links to your RSS feed (for an audience to subscribe), and links to the original media, should they choose to download your shows for their portable media device. Each posting of your episodes includes the original text of your blog post (should you want the audience to have context), and a permalink back to your original post.

We'd like for you to check out http://network2.tv and see if you like what we're doing. If you feel Network2 is a good way to promote your productions, sign up by sending email: to Jeffp@pulver.com. In the email, please include:

Your name.
Your email.
Your Show Name.
Your Show URL.
Your RSS Feed URL if you know it.
Whether or not you'd like to participate in any future commercial opportunities.

We will then review your show, watch several episodes, and determine if it would be a good fit for what we're including in Network2. When we're ready to add your show, we'll build the show page, and then send you mail for you to review your show. If everything looks okay, we'll bring the show live, and you'll be part of Network2.

We appreciate the opportunity to know more about you, and we look forward to working together to help showcase the quality work you're making in this new world of video on the Net.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff Pulver, founder Network2

Internet Video: To RSS or not RSS, that is THE Question

While RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication", it seems that there are a number of Indie Internet Video producers who have read Shelly Palmer's book "Television Disrupted" and feel that RSS stands for "Really Simple Stealing."

There was a time when TV quality content was only available on TV. And the relationships established was between the TV channel, the TV Network, the actors, the show and the fan. And this is a "one to many" relationship. Maybe it is 1 in a 1000 or maybe it was 1 in 10,000 who actually reached out and tried to connect with the show. With RSS, producers have the unique opportunity of having an intimate one to one relationship with everyone who subscribes to their RSS feed and then watches their latest episode as soon as it becomes available. But it is up to these producers to recognize this and then execute on it.

Case in point, an Indie show currently available on Feedburner. The video from this show is freely available as on Feedburner. And on Feedburner there are links to sites like: podNova, newsgator, netvibes, fireAnt, pageflakes, doppler, mimiq and winpodder as well as iTunes. And for what reason? To help the fan of the show subscribe to the RSS of the show and watch it on their favorite designated viewing medium. This includes watching the show live on line or place shifted by downloading an episode to an iPod.

At the moment, this show, like many others, is offering out their content for FREE. FREE as in, please come to this feed and "Watch my Show!" To some people FREE is just another four letter word.

And funny how it is that there are no doubt a growing number of people who subscribe to video RSS feeds and watch these feeds in a variety of viewing experiences.

So a funny thing happened to me after I went looking for a show to add to Network2. I recently stumbled across a show that looked interesting and after watching a couple of sample videos, it seemed fine enough to add to the guide of shows we have listed up on Network2. So I added the RSS from the show to the Network2 Guide.

Fast forward two weeks later and this all starts to get interesting.

At Network2 We make it a point to contact every show that gets added to the index of shows at Network2. We are not hosting their content and just point to it and most people so far have expressed their appreciation for our help in getting some attention for their show. I believe in Long Tail TV and look at Network2 as a platform for such content to be curated and discovered.

But not this guy. He believed that his content should be added to our guide on an opt-in basis, not opt-out. So regardless of whether or not I or another member of the Network2 team added the feed, or a visitor to our site suggested their feed, he would rather see it such that we get his permission to add his show to our guide. Interesting approach. Interesting given that anyone or any software application can just spider the web and subscribe to his RSS feed without his knowledge or his permission. With RSS it just happens.

Personally I'm an opt-out, not opt-in person when it comes to growing an industry sector. The world of Internet TV is moving too fast to have to wait for every exec producer to get back to me in order to showcase their show. Just a difference in philosophy...

Things were quiet for a couple of weeks until this guy got wind that Network2 was a commercial endeavor and he then felt that he should be compensated for his content. The same content that is otherwise available for viewing for FREE! Content that was getting more visibility over at Network2 than the way it was being marketed on its own on the public internet.

And do we currently have advertising on the Network2 site? No. Does it matter? It seems not. I'm sure there are people who understand how we plan to collaborate with executive producers, while others might not.

But since: RSS + TV = "The Future", I am committed to going long on this.

I am convinced RSS will play a major role in the future of TV on the Net. I can only hope that over time, more and more of the people who are getting involved inside the Indie Internet Video space will eventually appreciate the power of what Internet Video delivered via RSS offers. Same can be said for those people working in established media companies also exploring the concept of adding RSS to commercial content.

And as new quality episodic content for the Internet becomes available via RSS, my hope is help expose it in our guide to our growing audience over at Network2. And if you are associated with a mainstream media company which has added RSS to your commercial videos, don't be shy. Please send a quick email to jeffp@pulver.com and give me a heads up. Together we can help build up this industry.

Oh and with regard to show in question? It has been put to sleep on Network2.

###

New York:Media Information Exchange Group (NY:MIEG) December 2006 Meeting

This morning I attended the New York:Media Information Exchange Group (NY:MIEG) breakfast meeting hosted by Bill Sobel. It was a great event.

Bob Pittman, the innovator who created MTV and the former President & CEO of AOL introduced guest speaker Fred Seibert. Fred was the founding Creative Director at MTV, worked on the launch of Vh1 and has served as the President of Hanna/Barbera. Fred is the founder of Federator Studios where he currently serves as President & Executive Producer. Fred gave a great inspirational and engaging speech and I found his talk about his approach to business and to life eerily coincidental to the way that I do things. I also enjoyed the opportunity to speak with him afterwards.

Turns out that Fred happens to have one of channels that is currently featured on Network2

I am looking forward to attending and supporting future NY:MIEG activities.

Exploding TV on the Net: From 80 to 230 shows in 3 Months on Network2

Back on August 29th I posted a list of "TV Shows Only Available on the Net." The following day, Network2 was born. Today 232 shows can be found in the Network2 guide. These 232 shows are represented across the following 36 categories:

Arts | Business | Cartoons | Comedy | Culture | Documentary | Drama | Education | Entertainment | Family | Film | Food | Games | Government | Health | Hobbies | Instructional | International | Kids | Local | Medicine | Movies | Music | News | Organizations | Politics | Recreation | Religion | Science | Scifi | Society | Spirituality | Sports | Talk | Technology | Travel.

While these categories are still pretty fluid and there is some overlap between some of them, collectively, I believe Network2 provides great access to the where "Long Tail TV" can be found and watched on the Internet today.

Do you have your own Internet TV Show? Please email: jeffp@pulver.com to have it added to our list of shows.

Nice to see IDG News Publish One of My 2007 Predcitions regarding TV/IP:

InfoWorld: IT predictions for 2007

"As we gaze toward the vista of 2007, we find our e-mail inbox inundated with IT predictions for the new year from analysts, vendors and consultants. From those predictions and our own prognostications we present our forecast for the top IT stories in the year ahead:

...Internet-delivered TV is going to find its feet in 2007. We've heard that before, but it's got to happen some year and we think the new year will be it. It might even go as far as the prediction of IP (Internet Protocol) communications guru Jeff Pulver: "Every TV network, film studio and content creator will start to adopt a direct to the Internet and direct to the PDA strategy."

Alive in Mexico: Getting Noticed by InfoWorld

InfoWorld: Video blogger dodging bullets, teargas in Oaxaca, Mexico

"What's more ballsy than picking up your video camera and jetting off to Baghdad, Iraq to report on conditions for ordinary civilians caught in the midst of a civil war? How about picking up your video camera and jetting off to Oaxaca, Mexico, to report on the conditions of ordinary civilians caught in the midst of civil unrest and a government crackdown?

That's what Brian Conley, creator of the powerful Alive in Baghdad video blog has done with his latest project, Alive in Mexico...

...Conley and his collaborative projects (Alive in Baghdad has been run mostly by native Iraqis, armed with video cameras in recent months) is a sterling example of the potential and power of the Internet and portable, easy to use video and audio equipment to revolutionize the way news is gathered and consumed...

...Conley has some powerful people in his corner, including VON founder Jeff Pulver. Donations and sales of raw footage have allowed him to pay meager salaries to his staff in Baghdad and get the ball rolling in Oaxaca. For now, he says he's got enough video in the bag for six or so more posts to Alive in Mexico, providing he can keep one step ahead of the PFP."

---

Nice to see the work of Brian Conley getting the attention of InfoWorld.

2007 should be a breakthrough year for the growth of Citizen Journalism.

Something to be Desired: An Indie TV Show in need of some Fan Support

I now have a better appreciation for the folks at the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) who are responsible for running their viewer pledge drives.

Justin Kownacki, the producer of Something to Be Desired is asking the fans of his show to provide some monetary support to help keep the show “on the air.” Something to be Desired first launched on the Internet in the Summer of 2003.

This is the first public pledge drive that I’m aware of for an Indie Internet-Only TV Show.

Personally I thought it was kinda cool that people who donate $100 dollars or more can have a Walk-on role on STBD.

I’ve filled out the pledge card and hope that other fans of the show do the same.

Fall 2006 Video on the Net Content Now Available “On Demand” (for FREE) at blip.tv

A pulver.com/VON first: All the sessions from Fall 2006 Video on the Net in Boston are now available for On Demand viewing for free.

Delegates who attended Video on the Net were sent out a set of DVDs which covered the entire 17 hours of content that made up Video on the Net. This was the first time in the 10+ history of our producing our VON events that I invested in the people and technology needed to capture and produce our conference sessions as a DVD Movie.

While I must admit that while I was exploring the available viewing options it was strongly suggested by more than one vendor to come up with a model to charge something on a per view basis to watch the individual produced segments, in the end I went with FREE. Special thanks to our friends at blip.tv for hosting our conference content.

While we are working on confirming the people and sessions that will be taking place in San Jose March 19-22nd at Spring 2007 Video on the Net, now is a great time to catch up with the people and the topics that were discussed in Boston back in September.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of our conference, including our speakers, moderators and conference delegates as well as the people behind the camera who produced and made this programming possible.

Andrew Baron: What YouTube's Got that Others Do Not

Dembot: What YouTube's Got that Others Do Not

"...Or, say, you noticed a weblog post about Kramer from Seinfeld who was recorded and shown to be racist. If you wanted to see this, just knowing that a video existed, where would you go first? Not to CNN.

The destination is YouTube.

If it's out there, it's most likely on YouTube - It's the first place I go to SEARCH.

YouTube fills the role of that place to get prerecorded video in the same way CNN fills the role of live news.

Currently, no other site comes close to enough critical mass needed to serve the value of this entry point..."

From POTS to POTS

During an early morning conversation the other day with a my friend Jacob Ner David, when talking about Network2 and Video on the Net, we stumbled upon the redefinition of a term from the world of the PSTN that can now be re-used in the world of IP Video: For us, "POTS" now means "Plain old Television Service.” POTS formally meant “Plain Old Telephone Service.

New on Network2: The Ilana Donna Show

Just added to Network2: The Ilana Donna Show

The Ilana Donna Show

The Network2 Review: "I feel like I've been granted a super power: invisibility. This show feels like conversations between girls that guys rarely get access to hear. It's a great blend of personal commentary and engaging subjects. It seems the kind of show that can go into lots of different areas with ease. Imagine The View, only with people you'd really want to have dinner with. That's Ilanadonna's show."

Nice to see NBC Universal Experimenting with RSS

A week after NBC Universal announced the formal launch of their broadband channel DotComedy, I decided to take a look. After looking, I’m glad I did since it was nice to see NBC show their commitment to TV on the Net by providing RSS feeds for the content on their site. For me this was another sign that the statements made by various NBC Universal executives earlier this year about embracing the broadband internet were more than just words.

I did find the terms of service for their RSS feeds interesting:

---
“Terms of Use for DotComedy RSS feeds:

These feeds are offered free for private, non-commercial use in a newsreader or personal blog. You must use the feeds as-is, with proper attribution, and may not edit or otherwise modify the text, content or links.”

---
O.K, so maybe there is a digital rights issue that NBC has to deal with since they can’t ignore that and maybe there are some underlying international issues for the widespread distribution of some of their content. So why not create some original content which is not affected by their internal DRM and put that content out via RSS? I hope NBC uses their “broadband channel” as an experimental platform and see what kind of relationships are established between the network and fans of the content.

When I’m asked about the future of TV, I just assume that consumers will embrace RSS (or whatever it evolves into) and they will visit the websites of the TV shows which they like and as simple as a web click subscribe to getting new episodes of the show sent to them. Sure there will always be a broadcast schedule when most shows will air, but in the future there will be a growing dislocation between the people who watch the show when it becomes available and the shrinking community of people who only watch the show when it is broadcast. And then there is the community of people who embrace shows that never made it to TV but found a home on the Internet.

I am looking forward to the day when more consumers will be able to visit the website of their favorite prime time TV and Cable shows and have the ability to subscribe to the sixty second promo for the upcoming episode of their favorite show, and then one day the entire weekly episode. (iTunes is nice, but I'm looking for a lot more...)

Jeff Jarvis in support of: Spring 2007 Video on the Net

BuzzMachine: The future of whose TV?

“There’s a Future of Television conference going on in New York this week. I’m not going. It’s filled with executives from old TV. I’ll bet that the Video on the Net conference with the leaders from the new TV will be more interesting. I was actually surprised at this week’s conference that I didn’t see keynotes from Andrew Baron or Ze Frank. That’s the future of TV, folks.”

Last Night @ pulver.com/Network2 Networking Event in NYC:

Last night we held our first pulver.com/Network2 Networking Event at the Proof Bar in Manhattan. While I was expecting that fifty to sixty percent of the hundred people who RSVP'ed to the event to attend, during the course of the evening we ended up having close to 200 people visit with us. For more than a moment we had the who’s who in New York New Media at our inaugural event.

At the Proof Bar we had people representing various parts of the media ecosystem. There were a number of people representing what can be best called "new-new media companies", new media companies and old-media companies. There were a number of start-ups represented as well a few lawyers and even a couple of VCs in attendance.

It was great to see so many people come out in support of Network2 and Video on the Net. Some of the people who I met were people directly responsible for creating/developing/producing high quality independent episodic content for the Internet...shows either already on Network2 or soon to be on Network2.

Chris Brogan and I appreciated the lengths that some people had gone through to be with us last night. I met people who were visiting from: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Philly, Boston and the metro NYC area.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event last night. I am looking forward to co-hosting additional networking events in the future.

AniBOOM – the YouTube for Animation

One of the companies that I met with during my recent trip to Israel was AniBOOM.

According to their website, aniBOOM is a “cross-media, cross-platform animation content project which addresses wide audiences through a range of genres, techniques and means”

Uri Shinar presented AniBOOM in a Web 2.0 talk during the Rosh Pina TV and Film Festival. During his talk, I was reminded that Animation is an international and a cross-cultural language that expresses itself in different styles and genres.

Launched just a few short week weeks ago, AniBOOM is quickly becoming the destination site for viewing quality animation on the Internet.

Network2 is currently featuring a number of AniBOOM channels including:

Aniboom's top drama movies

Aniboom's top rated funny movies

Aniboom's music videos

Aniboom's top experimental movies

Aniboom's top rated crappy movies

PodCamp Pittsburgh: In the News

Associated Press: Bloggers, podcasters meet in Pittsburgh

"Scores of Internet technology professionals and enthusiasts are expected to gather over the weekend at PodCamp Pittsburgh, an informal meeting to trade tips on creating blogs, Web sites and podcasts, an organizer said Thursday.

The free event is among several being planned in cities from San Francisco to Berlin to pair established Internet media producers with newcomers "to improve the quality of our creations together," said Justin Kownacki, a Web video producer.

"It's a completely grass roots effort," he said. The meeting's unconventional format allows participants to help shape the agenda and "blow past all the formalities of a conference and get the brain trust in the room," Kownacki said."

---

I'm looking forward to following the activities from PodCamp Pittsburgh this weekend. Network2 is a sponsor, and our
own Chris Brogan and David Kowarsky will be taking part in the festivities.

Communications Technology: The Mouse Starts to Roar as a Channel Changer

Communications Technology: The Mouse Starts to Roar as a Channel Changer

"Here's a news flash: Television viewers don't need a television to view television...

...The champion of Internet-based cults, Jeff Pulver, who made VoIP a household term and VON a force, has noticed that trend and is jumping into it with both feet via Network2, a compilation and presentation of the best independent TV shows available only on the Internet. The Pulver-backed site features a guide to episodic programming that ranges from reality shows like "Alive in Baghdad," where citizen journalists cover the war, to "Fearless Cooking," where Gloria Piper cooks anything for your viewing pleasure – including on a future show, we understand, cable's goose.

Network2 is an Internet-based mini-cable system that pulls independent content together in one place to make it easy for viewers to find.

"The beauty and value of the Internet as a distribution means for television is instead of having to go after blockbusters, instead of asking how many millions of people you're going to look at, you can go after the people that really are going to respond as an audience," said Chris Brogan, community developer for Network2.

Katie Couric, whose nightly newscasts are pushed over the Web, will probably never answer an e-mail she receives about something she said or read, but Brian Conley, who produces the Baghdad show, most likely would. In fact, Brogan counts on it.

"This is insanely personal product," said Brogan. "The idea of putting independent producers in the driver's seat means that no one can tell us who should or shouldn't be on the platform and what shows we should or shouldn't watch."

Who's gonna pay?

For now, Network2 is free, but that's unlikely to continue if it picks up steam, and you can figure there will eventually be some cost-based model – perhaps even, shudder, advertising – added to it. It's also pretty much targeted to a user with a computer or portable device, but that, too – and this should frighten traditional video content delivery guys – is changeable because the end devices have ways to connect to the Internet, ironically through the broadband connection being delivered by the cable or telephone company.

"They can watch this on their 60-inch plasma screen and be as comfortable as anyone watching your standard cable product, but they're watching what they choose to watch," Brogan said.

Brogan was quick to differentiate the programming, which is vetted by Network2 before it goes on the site, from more freewheeling content from players like YouTube. Still, it is unmistakably unprofessional compared to the scripted fare available from the large broadcast and cable networks, as rare as scripted shows are becoming.

That difference might not matter when it comes to attracting and losing viewers, said Franco.

The eyes have it

"If consumers are going online to watch this, then it becomes a question of time – time away from traditional means to watch the untraditional, whether it's professional or not," Franco said. "In that sense, it could cut into viewing," she said."
