Aswath on FWD: Could it be a platform for Voice 2.0?
Aswath Rao: FWD Could be a Platform for Voice 2.0
Turns out that Aswath may have discovered "IP based Telepathy" in his recent analysis of the current direction of FWD. :)

FWD's "Call-Me" feature upholds the End-to-End Principle (According to Aswath):
As the "festive" Aswath pointed out in a recent post, whenever FWD's "Call-Me" feature is used, the "end-to-end principle is upheld."
It was nice to see Aswath draw attention to something that has been available with FWD since 2003, and something which today is still unique to the FWD service.

pulver.Communicator now supports Asterisk
The pulver.Communicator development team has just added what they consider "alpha" level support of Asterisk in pulver.Communicator for Windows XP.
We are looking for a few people who are familiar with both Asterisk and pulver.Communicator who would have the time to help us with the testing of this recently added functionality.
Those available and interested can visit this page.

Free World Dialup renamed to: FWD®
Effective immediately, “Free World Dialup” has been renamed to: “FWD.”
Back in May, 2004 we were awarded the US trademark for the letters “FWD®.”
During the past few months we have been working on the launch of our new website. A preview of the new FWD website is available for viewing at: http://beta.freeworldialup.com. The FWD web team would appreciate receiving feedback from our user community.

Free World Dialup: Back in the News
the Inquirer: Ecommerce talks
There is a nice reference today to Free World Dialup in a story written by Wendy Grossman which was published in the Inquirer. Next week FWD will be amongst the companies attending Fall 2005 VON and will also have a presence on the show floor.

eBay/Skype: Accelerating the Adolescence of the IP Communications Industry
Yesterday morning while reading the Business Week story: Tech IPOs Are Clicking Again, I started thinking just how mainstream the IP Communications industry had become in 2005. From the perspective of Fall 2005 VON, it also meant that even more VCs, Investment Bankers, Hedge Funds and Entrepreneurs will be getting involved in the IP Communications space.
Moments after I finished reading the story, I received an email from a friend who sent me a copy of the "eBay to Acquire Skype" press release and I just smiled. (Thank you AD). The world of IP Communications had just changed and become even more “real.” I just hope we all get a chance to enjoy the adolescence of IP Communications for as long as possible.
Just about everyone who is anyone in the IP Communication ecosystem will be joining us next week in Boston at Fall 2005 VON. Companies recently in the news including: AOL, Google, Microsoft, Skype, Vonage and Yahoo! will all be well represented amongst the 1500+ other companies that are already part of our event community.
If you are thinking about joining us and haven’t done so yet, today would be a great day to take a moment to register for Fall VON.
I’m looking forward to spending next week in Boston. Hope you can join us. :)

Looking for Beta Testers: New Version of pulver.Communicator
pulver.Communicator has been described as: "The Swiss Army Knife of IP Communications(sm)" since it is the only IP Communications client that provides: Simple RSS Reader, Video support, Multi Network IM support, Presence and SIP functionality.
The team behind the product is looking for a small group of people who can dedicate some time to help with the testing of the next release which will lead to the eventual commercial launch of the software.
The next version of pulver.Communicator [for XP] adds support for multiple SIP proxies which means you can log into multiple SIP networks at the same time that you are also logged into multiple IM networks. Our software is evolving into being a real-time "portal" for IP Communications.
Each application will be reviewed on its own merit. Please visit: http://pulver.com/fwd/beta-signup.html to apply to join the pulver.Communicator beta program.

Karl Bode from Broadband Reports recently interviewed me as a follow up to the recent FCC Order on FWD.
As interviews go, I think this one went pretty good.

Free World Dialup in the Boston Globe
Both FWD and I were covered today in the article, "Regulators worry as Net phone service surges" in today's Boston Globe.
While the FWD Petition was filed 11 months ago, it is seems to be the target of renewed interest by some members of the business press which have recently re-added VoIP to their beat.

Free World Dialup's FREE Calling Promotion Ending Soon...
Special thanks to the Free World Dialup user community for taking notice of our free calling for the holiday's promotion.
Also, special thanks to those of you who helped promote our activities and made sure that our "holiday present" it wasn't a secret to everyone.
I do hope that some of you have been able to take advantage of our "social experiment" and place a free phone call to a friend and/or relative in one of the places which we enabled calling to.
I hope to apply what we learned from this recent experience and take it all into account when exploring the possibility of doing something similar again in 2004.
We will be implementing a hardware upgrade the week of January 5th which should significantly improve the performance of the FWD Network.
Best wishes for 2004!

Living Under the Radar...
I just continue to find it amazing that whenever most members of the mainstream media write about voice over broadband service providers, they manage to remember to write about our friends at Vonage and Skype but forget about everyone else including FWD.
On well.
It seems that being nice and doing things to promote goodwill doesn't always get noticed by the media, but I'm resigned to believe that as long as there are people who are out there who are able to take advantage of our goodwill, then it will make the "social experiment" that makes up FWD so much more the worthwhile.

Free World Dialup: The word is spreading
It seems that our holiday promotion of providing free phone calls into 8 countries has started to have its intended effect.
Special thanks to everyone who is helping to spread the word.
During the past 24 hours, the FWD Network has grown by 2718 subscribers, at a time when our "average" increase was around 400 people a day.
We also experienced a significant increase in call attempts - 34,145 vs. 21,466 vs. 17,040 during the past couple of days.
Hopefully our holiday stats will continue to grow...
