This past Saturday morning, around 10:30 ET, my mobile phone started going off like crazy...phone calls from all over North America, text messages from my wife, and emails from lots of old friends....all within a few minutes.

What would create such an uproar on a quiet Saturday morning? Apparently, I was robbed in London and trying to get my friends on Facebook to wire me money on Western Union so I "could get home" by sending them Facebook emails and using chat.

Needless to say, I was not in London, nor was I robbed. Clearly, my Facebook friends are smart enough to see right through this and the calls to me were to let me know that my account was hacked. Since I wasn't at home, my wife wrestled control away from the hackers and had my password reset.

End of story, right? Well, about an hour after I regained control, my account was disabled by Facebook for "violation of Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities". Apparently, I had one particularly egregious violation which caused the account to be disabled...I was hacked. I'm the victim! Didn't matter. I followed the appeal process. No response. Researched similar cases on the Internet and tried other email addresses. No response.

Interestingly enough, over the past few days, my emotions have gone from semi-panic (I'm not going to find out who won Mafia Wars! -- not) to who gives a flying @#$@#.

Yes, Facebook has a tremendous value in being able to connect with people that live in different parts of the world or are simply old friends from high school and college that I was able to re-connect with via Facebook. Everyone else lives within five miles of me, works with me, or can otherwise pick up the phone or get together to catch up.

On the other hand, Facebook is a ridiculous waste of time. Swagbucks, the aforementioned Mafia Wars, Farmville, Fishville, and others of their ilk are just flotsam in the Facebook sea of useless trivia.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't have even gotten to this point if Facebook had some semblance of customer service or a clear issue resolution process. I'd happily spend a bit of time each day ignoring the dumb stuff and catching up on my extended friend's lives. But Facebook, even for people like Jeff Pulver, apparently doesn't give a youknowwhat. Jeff can't have more than 5000 friends, although he can have 350,000 followers on Twitter. Other friends, many with influence in the blogosphere, tell stories of being completely unable to get Facebook issues resolved. Apparently, there's no way to speak to a human being about issues.

So, in the time that I'm not on Facebook, I'm catching up on my RSS feeds, reading books (on my iPhone Kindle app of course) or spending more time figuring out why Jeff is so gosh-darn excited about Twitter.

Maybe I should get stuck in an elevator to find out.

*** Update: 4 days after my account was disabled and approximately 6 or so hours after I used the hash tag "#facebook" in a tweet, my account was restored. Coincidence?

How does someone get to have a 75+ minute tweetup in an elevator at the New York Times? I'm not exactly sure, but yesterday it happened to me.

Yesterday afternoon I went to the New York Times to attend what turned out to be an amazing discussion of social media and the Haiti Disaster. The session was moderated by Andrew Rasiej, founder of the Personal Democracy Forum and the speakers included my friend Ann Curry (@AnnCurry) from NBC News and the Today Show together with Rob Mackey (@RobertMackey), staff writer The New York Times, Erik Parker (@theparkerreport), a journalist who was in Haiti when the earthquake struck and Jason Cone (@MSF_USA), communications director, Doctors Without Borders. I attended the session to hear their first hand accounting of their experiences in Haiti.

After the session was over I was talking to Ann Curry and we were amongst the last of the people to leave the room. What happened next became surreal. Nine of us went into the elevator on the 15th floor at the New York Times and what should have been a 20 second ride down to the ground level turned into a 75+ minute experience as we got stuck in an elevator when the elevator missed the lobby level and went about one and half more feet below the lobby.

Turned out the elevator had an amazing cast of characters which included: Ann Curry; Jennifer Preston (@NYT_JenPreston), Social Media editor of the New York Times; Geo Geller (@GeoGeller) my friend who made it a point to document the experience; Ann Blinkhorn (@annblinkhorn) an executive recruiter; Phil Thomas DiGiulio (@holaphil), Co-founder @pegshot; Alex Howard (@digiphile), Associate editor, SearchCompliance.com; Todd McCarty the new Senior Vice President, Human Resources at the New York Times and one person who preferred to be invisible.

Moments after we were stuck, @NYT_JenPreston was the first to press the alarm which got the immediate attention of building maintenance. Almost immediately the cameras came on and photos were taken by @GeoGeller and video was captured by @holaphil. In a few minutes the air was turned in the elevator and the doors were jammed open by an inch or two. When that happened we relaxed and got comfortable while we waited to be rescued from the elevator.

I tried to tweet but my cell phone coverage was in and out but I was finally able to share my tweet "Stuck in the elevator with @anncurry @geogeller @holaphil and 5 others in New York Times building."

The conversations that happened during the time we were together in the elevator were fun and enjoyable. It helped that everyone was relaxed and friendly. The experience turned into a pretty amazing and unplanned tweetup and a chance to get to know a bunch of people whom I would never would have otherwise had a chance to spend time with.

About 75 minutes later the doors to the elevator were opened and we all walked out of the elevator. Afterwards we posed for a few photos, shared a few hugs and finally left the building.

When I woke up this morning I read about my experience of being trapped in an elevator in Gawker and branded as an "internet ubernerd." The world then became very surreal when Ann told our story in the opening of the Today Show by sharing the video captured by @holaphil. You can watch the opening of the Today Show by clicking here.

Last night was reminder that at any time an ordinary moment can become extraordinary.

Sometimes the real becomes surreal. Over the weekend I was on twitter and monitoring the best I could the unfolding situation in Haiti.

I happen to have been online during the time Doctors Without Boarders were trying to land their lane and ran into difficulties. I saw their press release and tweet, I saw Ann Curry's tweet about the situation and I ended up tweeting and retweeting about what was happening. And when I ended up including the US Air Force in one of my tweets, I received a message back from the US Air Force - "We're working it right now. More to follow."

I especially appreciated receiving a tweet from the US Air Force once the plane had landed.

My tweets were just part of a roar of tweets that were happening but more proof to me that together we can effect change. Together we can make a difference.

This story was recently shared in the New York Daily News. You can read this over at: Twitter used to help land plane with aid for Haiti earthquake victims

Wyclef Jean is a person who leads by example and someone who have the ability to stand up and change the world. I had no idea meeting him at the first #140conf would be so meaningful to me but it was. When Wyclef was in Norway to honor the President Obama's receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize I felt some of Wyclef's amazing energy at the concert he performed in. When I sent him a direct message on twitter to share my feelings, he took the time to respond directly to me. For a second I felt connected to what was happening in Norway and I know that is just one of the core results of twitter- connecting in thought instantaneously. Now we can connect to act within a minute through twitter.

I learned about the earthquake in Haiti during the #140conf Meetup in Philly on Tuesday night. I learned about the work of Wyclef soon after.

We are living in a time where the effects of the "NOW Internet" can change the world. For the first time ever, we the people can directly effect change by sharing messages and by donating money using platforms like SMS/text. When the message gets propagated around the world on places like twitter, the world has a new way to show support and respond. These are different times. NOW times. Watching the people of the world respond how they have is no surprise to me. During 2009 I discovered and rediscovered Humanity many times on twitter. We are all now seeing what it means to connect to people and empower people with a platform to take action themselves.

Wycelf is in Haiiti since yesterday and actively using the funds raised through twitter posting to help those in need.

Sending out my respect to Wyclef as someone who continues to stand up and change the world and do good things in a way that only he can.

"Social Media Jungle" took place the morning of January 6, 2010 at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. Social Media Jungle is an event I first produced in 2008 and it was the second year it was also held at CES.

The twitter hashtag for the event was #smjces and the following are the tweets that originated in room N256 at the LVCC and at times re-originated from other people from around world. Last night I went on to: http://search.twitter.com and I searched #smjces. The following 241 tweets from 71 unique people tell the story of "Social Media Jungle" at CES 2010. The people tweeting changed as guests weaved in and out of our audience.
