After hearing the magical Rebecca Ferguson perform at #DLD12, first by accident during her pre-DLD opening sound check (I wasn't invited to it but somehow managed to be on-site and in the right place an hour before DLD started), and then during her scheduled spot in the conference, what were the odds we would also briefly chat on our flight to London from Munich three days later?

There is synchronicity around all of us. Try to identify the moments when the improbable and the impossible start to sync up. Enjoy the magic of synchronicity. Enjoy every moment. :)

Last Monday night, while attending the DLD 12 party in Munich I ran into Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald Securities. He was greeted with a bear hug from me.

From 1993 to 1996 I worked for Cantor Fitzerald whose offices were at One World Trade Center.

It was Howard's decision to fire me in July 1996 that saved my life.

Cantor Fitzgerald Securities lost 700+ people on 9/11. And I had the kind of job that would have had me at my desk at the time Tower 1 was hit on 9/11.

I enjoyed listening to Howard tell my friend Yossi Matias tell the story of how my appearance in a May, 1996 Sunday New York Times story about Internet Telephony lead to my firing. It felt great hearing Howard feel proud about the work I did after I left his company.

And when Howard was done telling his story, I came up to him and told him, "Thank you for saving my life."

Since June 2009, it has been my honor to offer the chance for people from many different walks of life, from all over the world to come to New York City and share their stories on our stage. In addition to our live in-house viewing audience, our speakers have had an online audience of over 100,000 via our UStream broadcasts. If you take into account the amplification from the social web, moments from these events have touched million(s) of people.

The State of NOW Experience

Though seemingly viewed as random connections, there are no accidents in the State of Now, but rather an underlying and growing feeling of synchronicity at our conferences.

We are a deeply connected community with heart, soul and purpose. In many cases, we've discovered amazing people who are doing transformational work, positively impacting others, and demonstrating the power of the real time Internet.

I'm now in the process of developing the content for our June conference and themes of finding meaning, giving back, and sharing heart-felt stories are some of the things I am looking for.

So, here is what I am asking: If you have a story, or if you know someone who has a story to share, and whose voice should be heard at the 2012 State of Now taking place on June 19 and 20 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, I would love to hear from YOU.

Please visit: http://140conf.com/call-for-speakers and submit your proposal by February 3rd. (If you need an extension, please let me know.)

Hope to see you at State of NOW in June.

My kids continue to surprise me. And impress me. Now 17 years old, Dylan and Jake have become a force of nature inside the sneaker head community. I'm proud to be a dad of Sneakerheads. Two kids whose part time adopted job is to share their passion and their voice in Sneaker culture.

These days they run the blog SoleCamp ( http://solecamp.com ) and continue to contribute to the sneaker culture by their interactions with other members of the community via Twitter, Facebook, their blog and their random encounters at various sneaker events.

Without thinking about it, Dylan and Jake have become a force of nature and are setting an example of taking an opportunity and running with it. They didn't think about how hard it would be to establish a brand, a presence or to learn about the hobby or question why people would find what they had to say interesting. Instead, they just did it. They didn't ask anyone for permission. Running with their dream and being fueled by their joint passion, they have spent the past couple of years developing both a name and a brand for themselves and have earned the respect of others inside the sneaker head community - both the casual and hardcore hobbyists as well the store owners and even sneaker designers.

The bottom line is that Dylan and Jake have come into their own as they have learned to take their hobby seriously.

I just looked at their blog analytics and from December 5th, 2011 thru January 4th, 2012 they blog had:

-19,538 Total Visits
-17,462 Unique Visitors (from US (73.63%), Italy (7.71%), France (2.04%), Philippines (1.97%), UK (1.86%), Canada (1.41%), Germany (0.97%), Russia (0.96%), Netherlands (0.63%), Australia (0.55%))
-27,019 Total Pageviews

Pretty impressive showing for a pair of 17 year old kids who are pursing their passion and not doing anything to engage in search engine optimization. They are not spending a penny on advertising or doing anything special to bring people to their site.

Based on these numbers they have the foundation which could become a pretty valuable website which could pivot in a number of meaningful directions.

Last week I had the honor to attend a "Sneaker Release" with them at Extra Butter in Rockville Center, New York.

Go ahead and watch this video:

This was a Jake and Dylan Pulver production. Jake and Dylan took the time to get to the store about two hours before the midnight sneaker release. I came along for the ride. My kids started to camp out on the street, and then Jake took out their video camera. He started to think about the shots that he needed to capture in order to create this video. After the store opened both Jake and Dylan were welcomed by the owners as they filmed the first set of customers purchasing their new sneakers. When they were not filming, both Dylan and Jake worked the line of people waiting to get into the store like they belonged there, as they were amongst friends. Friends in some cases with people they never met before but whose presence they knew about from connecting with them on twitter and a number of other sneaker events around the metro NYC area.

Personally it felt like I was backstage at a rock concert and Dylan and Jake were checking in with other members of their band. The people on the line ranged from what seemed like teenagers to people in the 40s and older.

After watching them at this sneaker release, I realized that Dylan and Jake have grown up. They are their own people. They have direction. They have passion and their future is unwritten and unbounded.

The #140 Conferences in 2011 were about discovering and finding meaning, and realizing that it’s not about technology. It really is about people, about how some people are discovering their voice and how other people are discovering other people’s voices. Amplification is occurring that is creating a reawakening of humanity on one level, spirituality on another level, and the ability to affect change all at the same time. You now have people who never realized that they had the power to influence and to do, who are.

I used to think that these platforms were transitory; that something would evolve into something else. What I didn’t realize at the time was that we are living through truly what is a social revolution. That is a social revolution as an “ism”.

We know history says things like Communism, Fascism, Marxism, and Capitalism. There are a lot of isms. This is the internet “ism”. It is one of the unintended consequences of 43 plus years of the Internet.

We are seeing what happens when you are living in a world where hundreds of millions of people can discover each other, and communicate directly; where barriers to entry and in fact gatekeepers slowly go away. We are seeing what happens when people discover each other, discover that they can feel and connect, and can touch and engage. We now have generations of people who realize that they are living in a world of 7 billion other people, and where for the first time in our human history every voice matters. There is profoundness in terms of where this brings us.

A Reawakening of Humanity

I believe we are seeing a reawakening of humanity. People are discovering and feeling, maybe for the very first time. They understand that they can actually stand up and affect change not even realizing that is what they are about to do.

Although I still think that there is a need to have face-to-face interaction with people. These technologies allow an intensity in terms of connectedness we can feel. When we can read someone’s Facebook status and start to cry as a result of it, or laugh hysterically, or just smile, we realize that through this digital medium, feelings are emanating. For example, if you have searched someone on twitter, or wrote something and you cried because of it, maybe it was the loss of someone, or maybe it was frustration, then you have experienced this connectedness. As a result, words are turning into feelings and those feelings are turning into synapses in our minds.

There is a different world out there. If we close your eyes, we will start to visualize a world, which is not necessarily the one in front of us. When we get to the point where we can start hearing people whose voices are based on what we are reading and believe that when we type something we are really speaking back, it is a much different place than what we see.

There is a virtualization even though we are in the physical. There is still something happening spiritually, that is touching, changing, and connecting many of us. Some of us, unfortunately are kind of numb to it. They do not get it. They feel something but they do not know why they feel it. There are other people who actually have this intense ability not only to feel, but sometimes affect positive change. So these technologies are helping us accelerate some things.

Where does this leave us in terms of negative consequences? Well, short term tactical, yes, there are probably some negative affects because nothing is perfect. We are always evolving. I would like to believe that there is such a thing as a good failure. We have good mistakes. We learn, we develop, and we apply. The only failure I think is not to use these technologies. To ignore them, that is the failure. To try them out and see where it goes, to see where it takes us, that is the blessing of being alive.

The Power and Meaning of One Hug A Day

In all of my travels in the U.S., Europe and Israel, I have learned to hug. I have learned the power and meaning of a hug a day. I believe if you hug someone today, it is like sharing with them a concept of embracing today, making today matter. I am finding that more and more people are hugging, more and more people are connecting, and they do not even know why, but they are. We will start to see the after affects of what it means to be better connected.

There is nothing in Israel that is different than in the States, that’s any different in Europe in terms of the ability for people to connect with others. We are all human beings after all.

We may have different issues here that are amplified based on the society that we live in, but at the end of the day we are still people, and there is that human energy that drives everything.

On November 2nd, #140conf returns to Tel Aviv, and will be taking place at Nalaga’at” Center, located at the Jaffa port.

At #140conf Tel Aviv, one of the subject areas being covered for the first time at any #140conf is the social revolution which started in Israel in July and continues to this day.

Being that this event is taking place in Tel Aviv, the hi-tech start-up capital of the world, a number of the speakers will be from start-ups and I am looking forward to having Start-up Nation co-author Saul Singer speak on our stage.

I happen to have a passion for music and music is an area I look to cover at each of the #140conf events. I'm excited to have: David Broza, Efraim Shamir, Steve Greenberg and Yoni Bloch speaking at this conference.
